Virtualization Overview
Virtualization is a technology that lets
Organizations run multiple virtual machines on a
single physical machine, sharing the resources of
that single computer across multiple
environments. Virtualization technology
improves IT resources utilization and increases
the flexibility needed to adapt to changing
requirements and workloads. Also virtualization
allows and facilitates Disaster Recovery,
Business Continuity and Data Protection. Accordin
g to Gartner, Virtualization is ranked as one of
the top 10 technologies in 2008 2009 and 2010.

Gartner Identification for the Top 10 Strategic
Technologies
  • Gartner definition of Strategic technology
  • one with the potential for significant impact on
the enterprise in the next three years.
  • significant impact include a high potential for
disruption to IT or the business, the need for a
major dollar investment, or the risk of being
    late to adopt.
  • These technologies impact the organization's
long-term plans, programs and initiatives. They
may be strategic because they enable strategic
    advantage from early adoption.

Virtualization for Availability (Acc. To Gartner)
. Virtualization has been on the list of top
strategic technologies in previous years. It is
on the list this year because Gartner emphases
new elements such as live migration for
availability that have longer term implications.
Live migration is the movement of a running
virtual machine (VM), while its operating system
and other software continue to execute as if they
remained on the original physical server.
April 11, 2014
17
Virtualization for Availability (Acc. To
Gartner),
  • . The key value proposition is to displace a
variety of separate mechanisms with a single
dial that can be set to any level of
availability from baseline to fault tolerance.
  • . Expensive high-reliability hardware, with
fail-over cluster software and perhaps even
fault-tolerant hardware could be dispensed with,
    but still meet availability needs.
  • This is key to cutting costs, lowering
complexity, as well as increasing agility as
    needs shift.

Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 1 Hardware is underutilized (1) The
rapid doubling of processing power has had a
tremendous impact on daily activities So, if you
take year one as a base, with, say, processing
power of 100 million instructions per second
(MIPS) available, then in year two, there will be
200 in year three, 400 by year 10 today the
hardware is so powerful that software typically
uses only a small portion of the available
processing power. And this causes a different
type of problem..
April 11, 2014
21
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 1 Hardware is underutilized(2) Today,
many data centers have machines running at only
10 or 15 percent of total processing capacity. In
other words, 85 or 90 percent of the machines
power is unused. Most companies arent able to
take advantage of the increased power available
to them. After all, if youre hauling a 50-pound
bag of cement, having a truck come out that can
carry 20,000 pounds instead of this years
model that can only carry 10,000 pounds is pretty
irrelevant for your purposes.
April 11, 2014
22
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 1 Hardware is underutilized(3) However,
a lightly loaded machine still takes up room and
draws electricity, so the cost of todays
underutilized machine is nearly the same as if it
was before. It doesnt take a rocket scientist
to recognize that this situation is a waste of
computing resources. And, guess what? With the
steady march of HW Technology, next years
machine will have twice as much spare capacity as
this years .

23
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 1 Hardware is underutilized(4)
Obviously, there ought to be a better way to
match computing capacity with load. And thats
what virtualization does by enabling a single
piece of hardware to seamlessly support multiple
systems. By applying virtualization,
organizations can raise their hardware use rates
from 10 or 15 percent to 70 or 80 percent,
thereby making much more efficient use of
corporate capital

Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 2 Energy costs go through the roof
(1) The increasing march of computerization
discussed means that every company is using more
power as their computing processes expand. Power
costs, have skyrocketed, making power a more
significant part of every companys budget. In
fact, for many companies, electricity now ranks
as one of the top five costs in their operating
budgets.

25
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 2 Energy costs go through the roof
(2) The cost of running computers, coupled with
the fact that many of the machines filling up
data centers are running at low utilization
rates, means that virtualizations ability to
reduce the total number of physical servers can
significantly reduce the overall cost of energy
for companies.

Trend 3 System administration costs
mount Computers dont operate on their own.
Every server requires care and feeding by system
administrators who, as part of the operations
group, ensure that the server runs properly.

Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot
Trend 3 System administration costs mount
(2) Common system administration tasks
include monitoring hardware status replacing
defective hardware components installing
operating system (OS) and application software
installing OS and application patches monitoring
critical server resources such as memory and disk
use and backing up server data to other storage
mediums for security and redundancy purposes.

29
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot
Trend 3 System administration costs mount
(3) System administrators are usually located
with the servers due to their need to access the
physical hardware, the job can not be off
shored. The steady increase in server numbers has
meant demand for system administration increase.
virtualization offers the opportunity to reduce
overall system administration costs by
reducing the overall number of machines that need
to be taken care of.

30
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 3 System administration costs mount
(4) Although many of the tasks associated with
system administration (OS and application
patching, doing backups) continue even in a
virtualized environment, some of them disappear
as physical servers are migrated to virtual
instances. Overall, virtualization can reduce
system administration requirements by 30 to 50
percent per virtualized server, making
virtualization an excellent option to address the
increasing cost of Opex.

Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 4 Data Centers Run Out of Space(1) The
business world has undergone an enormous
transformation over the past 20 years. In 1985,
the vast majority of business processes were
paper based. Computerized systems were confined
to so-called backroom automation payroll,
accounting. Business process after business
process has been captured in software and
automated, moving from paper to computers. The
rise of the Internet has exponentially increased
this transformation.

33
Why Virtualization Is Hot, Hot, Hot.
Trend 4 Data Centers Run Out of (2) IDC
estimates that total storage shipped will
increase 50 percent per year for the next five
years. The net effect of all this is that huge
numbers of servers have been put into use over
the past decade, which is causing a real-estate
problem for companies.

Desktop Virtualization
42
What keeps you up at night?
Information and data is our most important asset.
We spend too much time recovering lost data from
stolen laptops.
How do I maintain or improve desktop management
when Im required to do more with less?
Windows 7 is here, I need to prepare for it!
I spend a lot of time on desktop support calls.
But I really need to focus on strategic IT
initiatives that really add value.
It is difficult to respond quickly when employees
are mobile and scattered across the world.
43
Desktop virtualization is the answer now
  • Lower TCO by 50
  • Ease Windows 7 migration
  • Technology is ready
  • User adoption on the rise

Business Continuity And Disaster Recovery
  • Due to the ongoing advancements in the business
strategy as well as technology innovation,
    response to security threats, application
changes, and capacity growth business have become
    increasingly dependent on complex IT
    environments.
  • And as the business dependence on IT increases
the less you are able to interrupt services for
both internal and external users is more
important. For this reason business continuity
has become a vital necessity in the business
    world especially for organizations operating
around the clock worldwide and need to be
    globally present 24/7.

50
  • suitable virtualization solutions that fit within
    the clients budget.
  • It helps in eliminating the cost and
    unpredictability of traditional disaster recovery
    solutions, build highly effective disaster
    recovery plans.

Data Center Management
52
The Reality in Most Datacenters
53
Data Center Management
  • Administrators usually have a limited insight of
the status of IT services which increases risk
exposure and IT outages. IT departments are also
weighed down by numeral requests for providing IT
services or updating current ones. They are stuck
wasting cycles on mundane tasks, and dont have
time to focus on what really matters.
  • Through the different solutions that AlkanCIT
offers, it enables the organization to have full
control over its physical and virtual environment
    under one management platform.

54
  • Servers become dynamic software files that can be
provisioned, managed, secured and protected with
greater speed and efficiency using an on-demand
    pool of infrastructure resources. Applications
can be delivered seamlessly with the highest
level of availability and service levels, without
the cost and complexity of traditional IT
    solutions.
