Biography
  • Henry Fuseli was born in Zürich Switzerland in
    1741
  • He was the second of eighteen children to Johann
    Caspar Fuseli
  • His brothers and sisters became artists like his
    father, but he was pushed to become a priest.
  • He went to study theology at Caroline College in
    Zürich
  • He was ordained a Zwinglian clergyman in 1761

Biography
  • He attempted to support himself with his writing,
    but that did not work.
  • He translated many of Shakespeare's plays into
    German
  • He was eventually persuaded by Joshua Reynolds to
    become a painter.
  • He did not follow the norm of painters quiet
    grandeur, that was not his style.
  • He painted whatever he wanted and listened to his
    inner self.

Biography
  • He painted mostly scenes from Shakespeare's
    plays.
  • He also painted a lot of dreamlike scenes.
  • In 1788 he married Sophia Rawlins, she was a
    model for some of his paintings.
  • In 1799 he was appointed Professor of painting at
    the Royal Academy and keeper of the Academy in
    1804.
  • He died on April 16, 1825

  • He had a very loose style, he was not a
    perfectionist and sometimes his paintings would
    seem almost unfinished.

  • on stage.
  • His lighting is also very
  • unique, in that it is theater like.

    did what he wanted.
