  • The infinitive to base form of the verb.
  • Do you like to learn grammar in English?
  • Find the infinitives in these sentences.
  • Your teacher plans to put your stories in a class
    magazine, so she wants you to give her a final
    copy.
  • I would like to remind you to make an appointment
    with me if you want me to recommend another
    English class for next year.

Form of the Negative Infinitive
  • To make an infinitive negative, put not in front
    of it.
  • Anna told you not to worry too much about
    understanding everything in the movie.
  • Many teachers advise their students not to copy
    information from the Internet.

Infinitives after SomeVerbs
  • You can put an infinitive after SOME verbs. Many
    grammar books have lists. (Grammar Express has
    one on p. 338.)
  • agree, appear, request, hope, learn, seem,

Objects with Infinitives
  • Sometimes a noun (the object) comes between the
    verb and the infinitive. Its usually a person or
    people.
  • A few students asked Suzanne to help them with
    their essays.
  • Does your boss expect you to work overtime?

  • After some other verbs, if you want to use an
    infinitive, you MUST put an object first.
  • tell, order, advise, warn, invite, hire, permit,
    teach
  • The police officer reminded the driver to fix the
    cars headlights.
  • Anna encouraged some students to see a counselor.

  • After some other verbs, you can choose to put an
    object before an infinitive OR you can choose not
    to do it. Sometimes this changes the meaning.
  • expect, help, need, want, would like
  • The boss asked to go first. (The boss wants to be
    1.)
  • The boss asked the employee to go first. (The
    employee 1, the boss 2.)
