1-2 Local WEATHERIts causes and effects
2
Objectives
  • I can explain what factors or conditions create
    weather.
  • I can describe how severe weather causes
    destruction in the environment.
  • I can explain I can explain how meteorologists
collect data using each weather instrument.
  • .

3
HOMEWORK
  • Bring in a copy of a local weather report.
  • Either cut it from a newspaper, print it from the
internet, or write down what you hear from the TV
    weather report.

4
Weather Report
  • Spend the next few minutes writing a brief
description of the current weather in your ISN
    (left side).

5
Share Reports
  • Lets share our reports.
  • Today the weather was
  • Compare/Contrast
  • How were the reports similar and different?

6
Homework Sharing
  • What types of information are included in your
    weather report?
  • What was the source for your weather report
    (where did you get it)?
  • How does this weather report compare to the
    report you just wrote?
  • Did you include any actual measurements in your
    report?

7
Todays Weather Report
  • Lets take a look at todays weather report on
    the internet.
  • Look for these things
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Wind direction
  • Wind speed
  • Pressure
  • Visibility

8
TEMPERATURE
  • How hot or cold the air is

9
HUMIDITY
  • The amount of water vapor in the air.

10
WIND DIRECTION
  • The compass direction from which the wind is
    coming.

11
WIND SPEED
  • How fast the air is moving past a measuring point.

12
PRESSURE
  • The force of the air pushing in all directions.

13
VISIBILITY
  • The distance one can see through the air.

14
WEATHER TOOLS
  • We have many tools in our weather kit to help us
    measure weather.

15
WEATHER TOOLS
  • Thermometer temperature
  • Barometer air pressure
  • Hygrometer humidity
  • Anemometer wind speed
  • Wind vane wind direction

16
Glue Weather Tools into ISN and then read
about them to yourself.
17
  • Depending on time
  • Watch part 1 or 3 of video
  • Read Naming Hurricanes
  • Watch video of Hurricane Katrina or Sandy

18
Day 2- Inv. 1 Part 2Daily Measurements
  • Each day we will collect weather data and record
    it on our weather chart.
  • Our readings should always be made in the same
location! Why do you think we need to do this?

Time to go OUTSIDE
  • Each group will get a chance to practice using
    all our measurement tools.
  • ACT LIKE SCIENTISTS!
  • Listen for the whistle to indicate a rotation.

23
Review of Weather Data
  • Lets report our results and see if we got
    similar results.
  • Temperature degrees C or F?
  • Pressure mb (millibars)
  • Humidity
  • Wind speed mph
  • Wind direction compass direction from which the
    wind is coming

24
WORD BANK
  • Severe Weather- weather that is dangerous or
    causes damage.
  • Forecast- prediction about weather.
  • Meteorology- the scientific study of Earths
    weather.

    and effects of Earths weather
