Students Need
Understanding Special Places Teaching
6
Starting to Understand
  • 75 of people under 25 do not and will not use
    one
  • 90 of people under 25 will use one less than 2X
    per month
  • What is it?

7
Students Need Understanding
  • Why Do Non-traditional Students Go Back To
    School? (SLOAN-C)
  • Child in school -- Illness -- Loss of a job
-- personal development -- make money

8
Students Need Understanding
  • 2007 7.7 Million students took an online course
from a degree granting institution (doubled from
    2002 2005 - 2007) --The Sloan Consortium
  • College Students in 2007
  • Only 20 fit the 18-22 residential stereotype
  • Average age is 27 (with one-quarter over 30)
  • Most are commuters
  • Over 40 are part-time students (with jobs and
    families)
  • Most are pursuing college for career purposes (to
get a better job, not to get away from home or
    grow up)
  • 78 wish more online classes were offered

9
Understanding the Individual
  • Differentiation By definition, differentiation
is wary of approaches to teaching and learning
    that standardize. Standard-issue students are
rare, and educational approaches that ignore
academic diversity in favor of standardization
are likely to be counterproductive in reaching
the full range of learners. Tomlinson (2006)

59
Important Future Quote
  • In the long run, excesses of technology mean
that the comparative advantage shifts from those
with information glut to those with ordered
knowledge from those who can process vast
amounts of blab to those who can explain what is
worth knowing and why (Ratinoff, 1995)
