Situation
You spent a gap year in the USA after you have

condolences.

  notes of expressions used to express sympathy

• Assignment
• Go to the Mind Publications site to get some
  hints on what NOT to say (just click on the icon)
• Now, together with a classmate, make a list of at
  least six possible opening sentences
• Then five possible sentences you could use to
  express your sympathy. Use the net to search for
  the right type of expression (good search words
  are expressing grief bereavement - sympathy ).
• Finally, try to think of three different ways in
  which you can explain why you cannot attend the
  funeral, but that you will stay in touch.

Procedure

• Together discuss who is to have which role
• (bereaved family member Dutch gap year student)
• Practise your phone conversation before making
  the recording.
• Make a recording when you feel certain you can
  express your sympathy adequately.

• Think up a list of 20 Dutch words/expressions
  that are associated with bereavement. Next
  translate these words into English.
• Look up the translation of those words you do not
  know yet. Obviously, you can do this in a
  conventional dictionary or on internet

• It may also be inspiring to use the following
  site Http//dictionary.cambridge.org. This is an
  English English dictionary. Type, for instance
  the word bereavement and proceed from there.
