Careers Advice for Year 10 and 12
2
STEP 1 Think about what you want from your
future career.
  • To provide a service to others?
  • Something interesting to do?
  • A high salary / enough money to pay the bills?
  • Opportunity to continue learning?
  • Plenty of challenges ahead or little stress?
  • Future goals to aim for / ladder to climb?
  • A good work / life balance?
  • Opportunity to travel / stay at home?

STEP 2 - Also consider -
  1. What really interests you school subjects,
extra curricular activities, part-time jobs etc.
  2. Where do your skills and abilities lie
    motivating others, communication skills, working
as part of a team, school subjects etc.
  3. Where would you achieve your potential staying
on at school or attending a FE college?

4
STEP 3 - Psychometric Tests should then be used
to generate career ideas
  • Psychometric and interest tests can be used to
match individual interests, skills and qualities
to those required by a variety of careers.
  • Try
  • 1. Stamford Test (www.ucas.co.uk)
  • 2. CID (Jed) careers library
  • 3. Pathfinder careers library
  • 4. Odyssey Plus careers library

5
STEP 4 Use the Careers Library
  1. The careers library should then be used to
investigate the list of careers which match your
    own skills and abilities.
  2. Research will enable you to eliminate many
options and to produce a short list of viable
    career paths.
  3. It is then essential to check that your GCSE and
A level subject choices are suitable for your
    career short list.

6
What parents/guardians should do -
  1. Listen to your childs ideas, hopes and fears,
    and remain openminded!
  2. Emphasise the importance of extra-curricular
activities, work experience, job shadowing and
    volunteering.
  3. Help them to develop decision-making skills to
weigh the benefits and disadvantages of different
    options.

7
  1. Support their exploration of interests and career
paths even if it isnt what you hoped!
  • Encourage your child to
  • begin career planning now.
  • Degrees which sound interesting may not improve
    their employment prospects.
  • Discuss career-related
  • issues such as the ambition
  • required to succeed and
  • working in a field you enjoy.
