Personality Development

• Personality is the sum total of behaviors,
  attitudes, beliefs, and values that are
  characteristic of an individual.
• Personalities continue to develop throughout
  their lifetimes.
• Personality development is more rapid during
  childhood.

Nature Versus Nurture

• Some people think that our personality comes from
  biology. They think that it is heredity that
  causes this. These people are on the nature
  side.
• The use of instincts was a key argument for these
  people.
• Aptitudes are examples of hereditary
  characteristics.

• Birth order can also have an effect on
  personality. This would be the nurture side.
• Parental characteristics can also have an effect
  on personality.
• The cultural environment can have an effect on
  personality. This would be on the nurture side.
