Title: Welcome to Math Class

1
Welcome to Math Class
  • Ms. Van Looy, Ed.S

2
Math is a Game
  • When I was young my Dad used to tell me that
school was a game. My job was to win the game by
    learning and asking questions.
  • Grades are how we keep score in the game.
  • I like math because each problem is like a little
puzzle just waiting to be solved. I love knowing
that if I try hard enough I can always find the
    right answer.

3
This is my son, Carter.
  • Carter is 36 years, 5 months, 2 weeks, and 1 day
younger than I am. I was born on October 27,
1974. How old will Carter be on August 31st?
  • Give your answer in years, months, weeks, and
days. Show how you figured it out using words,
    pictures, and/or symbols.
  • Assume a month goes from date to date (ex
    October 27 to November 27).

4
I love photography!
  • In addition to being a teacher, I am also a
photographer. I own a company called Top Pea
Portraits. In fact, I was the photographer at
one of the other seventh grade teachers wedding.
  • Find out whose wedding it was by solving the
problem below. The solution will tell you the
teachers room number at River Trail.

5
Learning is Fun!
  • I love to learn new things. I think the
challenge of doing something I havent done
before is very satisfying. As a result, I have
been a student for most of my life!
  • Use the clues on this page to figure out how long
Ive been a student. Give your answer in years
and months. Show how you arrived at your
solution using words, pictures, and/or symbols.
  • I was born, October 27, 1974.
  • I started going to First Montessori when I was
    three years old.
  • I graduated from Chattahoochee High School in
    June 1993.
  • I graduated 6 months early from Emory University.
  • I have two masters degrees. The first one took
    1.5 years to complete.
  • For the second one, I was working full time and
going to school part time so it took much longer.
  • I went to school for twice as long as it took me
to finish the first masters degree then I took a
year off before completing my final year.
  • I graduated in March 2011 with my Educational
Specialist degree. I started that Degree in July
    2009.
