The library web page will be your starting point
for various databases and services available for
use in your studies.

Create an E-Book Account
By clicking on the link for Ebook accounts and
creating a free account, you will be able to use
over 50,000 books that are available in
electronic format.

To Find a Book
Select LMN Catalog to locate books at any of the
GSCC Libraries.

Select Search
In the first drop down, choose the type of search
you need. SUBJECT is the most common search.

Select Library
Choose your library from the second drop down box.

Type Search Words
Type your subject in the middle box. Click GO
to run the search!

Subject Index
Choose the part of the subject that will best
suit your research.

Title list
Most of the information to create a citation is
included in the title list. Icons on the right
will show you what sort of item is available. A
book on the shelf. An Ebook.

Full Record (call number)
The full record will provide you with location
and call number. Other useful tidbits can
include the number of pages, a picture of the
cover, a book review, or perhaps the table of
contents.

E-Book
Instead of a call number, you have a link to the
book. CLICK!

Inside the E-Book
Click view and be prompted to log in.

Table of Contents
  • Like a book you take off the shelf, you will
    examine the table of contents for the best place
    to start reading.
  • Click on an interesting chapter.

Chapter by Chapter
You can read online or print limited amounts.
The Return to Catalog button will take you back
to the full record when you are done.

Book Index
The index is useful for locating specific topics
in a book quickly! Click on the page number.

To the Alabama Virtual Library
When your instructor says journal article, where
do you go? The AVL is your source for magazine
and journal articles. Free user names and
passwords are available at the library.

Database List
  • The database list is divided into sections. You
    can search across several databases at once or
    choose an individual database.

Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier is a good general
database containing information on a wide number
of topics.

Starting the Search
Type your search words. Click Full Text. If
your instructor asked for journal articles, click
Scholarly Articles.

Results List
  • Choose an article to read or use for your
    assignment.
  • If you dont see a good article, you may want to
    use the additional terms to the right.

Citation View
The citation view will provide Title, Author,
Source for the article as well as a web address
for your work cited page. Click on PDF Full
Text to see the article.

Reading the Article
  • To print the article, use the small printer under
    the words Result List.
  • To email the article, use the link to the right.

Emailing the Article
To help with making those pesky citations, be
sure to choose the format your instructor has
chosen for the course. MLA is a common format at
GSCC

Email Confirmation
Click on the continue button to return to your
search.

Find the Citation
When you open your email program to retrieve your
articles, notice that the citation is before the
article.

What to do if you have problems
  • Check your spelling
  • Use fewer wordsRemember the more you type the
    less you get
  • Take out A, And, The
  • Use synonyms
  • Try a different database
  • Ask your Librarian or Instructor for help!
