How is Immigration the SAME in 1850-1920 and Today
  • Medical Exams/Documentation that needs to occur
  • US is still reluctant to accept too many
    immigrants
  • Still persecution, racism, etc. that some
    immigrant groups have to deal with
  • Still many people from around the world who want
    to come here
  • Many push factors still the same!

SAME SAME SAME
  • Push Factors Religious persecution or
    limitations, War, jobs/opportunities, to get away
    from harsh govt (dictator, etc.), earn Freedoms
    (speech, etc.), family ties.
  • Pull Factors also the same Freedom of religion,
    no war, plenty of work, better opportunities,
    democratic govt, family is here!

How is Immigration DIFFERENT in 1850-1920 and
Today
  • LOTS more paperwork and requirements have to be
    completed
  • Traveling has changed was a boat (steerage) now
    plane, train, automobile, feet
  • No more Ellis Island or Angel Island!
  • Different people/cultures at different times
    then Europeans now Latin Americans and Asians

  • Used to be immigrants were encouraged to come,
    now we dont see that.
  • WALL WALL WALL WALL WALL
  • Travel time not as long was approximate one
    month, now hours/days to get to USA
  • Fewer immigrants now then in the late 1800s
    1920s.
  • More illegal or undocumented immigrants then in
    1800s 1920s.

DIFFERENT DIFFERENT
  • Fewer deadly illnesses that are a concern
  • Medical care better and more available to the
    public
  • More acceptance of different cultures (languages
    taught in schools, bilingual signs in various
    locations, cultural pride and celebrations)
  • More interaction with various countries that also
    are immigrants.
