1
Energy-from-Waste Path to a Northeast Low Carbon
Fuel Standard
2
The New Paradigm Waste Is A Resource
  • Waste is by far the regions most significant
    resource.
  • - NESCCAF Report, June 2009

Use of waste for energy is consistent with the
EPA Waste Hierarchy
  • Energy from Waste (EfW)
  • Power plant that uses MSW as fuel
  • Generates renewable baseload electricity and/or
    steam
  • Uses available state of the art technology
    meets strict emissions limits
  • Currently 43 facilities in the Northeast
    generating 1400 MW
  • Waste to Diesel Process
  • Non-ester renewable diesel through a catalytic
    depolymerization process
  • Applicable to a variety of waste feedstocks,
    including MSW
  • Demonstration project under construction

Summary
Electricity, steam, and biodiesel generated from
the Municipal Solid Waste resource can make a
significant contribution to a low carbon fuel
supply.
  • EfW is a proven currently available technology
  • Waste to Diesel demonstration facility under
    construction
  • Recovering energy from MSW waste biomass does
not result in CO2 emissions from land use change
  • MSW is readily available close to the areas of
    greatest demand
  • Use of MSW in generating electricity and
    biodiesel eliminates ALL potential landfill
    methane generation, a potent GHG
