History
  • Positive Connection began in 1991 as a community
    outreach project of Grace and Truth Full Gospel
    Pentecostal Church.
  • Church staff and congregation members volunteered
    Intervention Services at the Phillip S. Gilliam
    Youth Services Center the primary detention
    facility for juvenile offenders in Denver.

  • Positive Connection was founded in 1994 and
    received its first grant to provide Prevention
    Services to middle school girls.
  • Prevention Services were offered at Cole Middle
    School and Gove Middle School.
  • In 2000, Redirection Services were offered to
    girls involved in the juvenile justice system.

  • Positive Connection obtained its own 501(c)3
    status in 2002 and provided Prevention,
    Intervention and Redirection Services to girls
    ages
  • 9-18 years.

  • Contracted by The Conflict Center

  • Group Mentoring
  • Offered monthly with positive and caring adult
    mentors and volunteers.
  • Activities are specifically geared toward female
    and adult bonding and include grooming sessions,
    craft projects, casual and social interaction.

  • Four times a month, girls participate in a
    self-empowerment workshop.
  • Includes classes in employment readiness,
    self-esteem, health and hygiene, employment
    readiness, self-sufficiency and current issues.

  • Reading Enrichment and Skill Building
  • Structured to allow girls to work independently
    and at their own pace on computerized educational
    programs.
  • The majority of our participants are reading
    below grade level by at least one, two or more
    years.

  • Encouraging participants to give back to the
    community and show them ways in which making
    positive contributions to the community are
    important to their own personal development and
    self-interests.
  • Incorporates Community Service to participants
    who must complete Community Service work as a
    condition of sentencing.

    Employment Office and Safe City Diversion.
  • Hires youth from 14-18 years of age.
