Title: Living With My Vows

1
Living With My Vows
  • Job 222728

2
Making a Vow !
  • a vow is a transaction between a person and
his/her deity whereby the former undertakes in
the future to render some service or gift or
devotes something valuable here and now.

Vow an oath, with Diety being both witness
recipient
3
A Bold Example Judges 11
  • A Vow by Jephthah his history
  • A Gileadite of the tribe of Gad made a Vow
    to God
  • Give me the Ammonites in battle
  • Whatever comes out of my doors to greet me, I
will sacrifice to you in a burnt offering Vs
    30-31
  • What would Jephthah do?

4
What Could He Do?
  • As many today, disregard his vow.
  • He could honor his vow as long as it was
something he was willing to give - Clean -
    Unclean
  • He could honor his vow regardless of its
importance Vow to God, must be kept at all cost
  • He kept the vow to God because he knew he must
  • He sacrificed his daughter to God
  • ----------------------------------
  • Gods law condemned unclean animal sacrifices
  • It also condemned human sacrifices

5
No Unclean Animal To Eat
  • Lev 1010 And that ye may put difference between
holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean
  • Lev 112-7 Speak unto the children of Israel,
saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat
among all the beasts that are on the earth.3
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted,
and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall
ye eat. 4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of
them that chew the cud, or of them that divide
the hoof as the camel, because he cheweth the
cud, but divideth not the hoof he is unclean
unto you. 5 And the coney, because he cheweth the
cud, but divideth not the hoof he is unclean
unto you. 6 And the hare, because he cheweth the
cud, but divideth not the hoof he is unclean
unto you.7 And the swine, though he divide the
hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the
cud he is unclean to you.

6
No Human Sacrifices
  • Lev 201-3 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Again, thou shalt say to the children of
Israel, Whosoever he be of the children of
Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in
Israel, that giveth any of his seed unto Molech
he shall surely be put to death the people of
the land shall stone him with stones.3 And I will
set my face against that man, and will cut him
off from among his people because he hath given
of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary,
and to profane my holy name.

7
Children of Israel
Had Ruined Themselves
  • Ezek 2226 Her priests have violated my law, and
have profaned mine holy things they have put no
difference between the holy and profane, neither
have they shewed difference between the unclean
and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my
sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.

8
Passages For Consideration.
  • Lev 2728-30 Notwithstanding no devoted thing,
that a man shall devote unto the Lord of all that
he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field
of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed
every devoted thing is most holy unto the Lord.
29 None devoted, which shall be devoted of men,
shall be redeemed but shall surely be put to
death. 30 And all the tithe of the land, whether
of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the
tree, is the Lord's it is holy unto the Lord.

9
He is listed with those of great faith
  • Heb 1132-38 And what more shall I say? For the
time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak
and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel
and the prophets 33 who through faith subdued
    kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained
promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34
quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge
of the sword, out of weakness were made strong,
became valiant in battle, turned to flight the
armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their
dead raised to life again. Others were tortured,
not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain
a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial
of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains
and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were
sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the
sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and
    goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented
38 of whom the world was not worthy. They
wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and
    caves of the earth.

10
Do We Make Similar Commitments Today?
  • Do We Profane Ours Like They Did?

11
What Possible Vows Would We Make Today As
Christians?

12
Christianity Is A Covenant Vow
  • Matt 2237 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love
the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all
thy soul, and with all thy mind.
  • Matt 2239 Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
    thyself

13
Christianity Is A Covenant Vow
  • Matt 624 No man can serve two masters for
either he will hate the one, and love the other
or else he will hold to the one, and despise the
other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
  • John 1226 If any man serve me, let him follow
me and where I am, there shall also my servant
be if any man serve me, him will my Father
    honour.

14
Christianity Is A Covenant Vow
  • Matt 633 But seek ye first the kingdom of God,
and his righteousness and all these things shall
    be added unto you.
  • Matt 76 Give not that which is holy unto the
dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine,
lest they trample them under their feet, and turn
    again and rend you.

15
Christianity Is A Covenant Vow
  • 1 John 215-16 Love not the world, neither
the things that are in the world. If any man love
the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the
flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of
life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

16
Christianity Is A Covenant Vow
  • Matt 2445-46 Who then is a faithful and wise
servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his
household, to give them meat in due season?46
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he
    cometh shall find so doing.
