2Experiences of Host Country - Bangladesh
- SACOSAN was borne out of a shared desire
(expressed by the Govt. of Bangladesh, in
partnership with WSSCC, UNICEF, WSP, WHO, DANIDA,
DFID, ADB, UNDP, Water Aid, Plan Bangladesh) to
priorities sanitation and hygiene amongst the
political and technical groups working in the
region. - The first SACOSAN was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh
in October 2003 - Over 300 delegates and guests from 9 Country
Delegations (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan,
India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and
Sri Lanka) and other local and international
organizations participated in the conference. - The conference was organized to review the state
of sanitation and hygiene in south Asia through
sharing experiences and ideas.

- Overall goal of the conference was to accelerate
the progress of sanitation and hygiene work in
South Asia so as to enhance peoples quality of
life - Fulfillment of MDGs and the commitments made in
the world submit on sustainable development in
Johannesburg - At end of the Conference, a declaration was made
called Dhaka Declaration through consensus among
the leaders.
4Initiatives taken by Govt.
- 2003 GOB declared Sanitation for all by 2010
- 2003 National Baseline Survey carried out for
sanitation in Bangladesh. - 2004 Union Councils assigned to look after rural
water and sanitation program. - 2004 GoB year marked 20 allocation of ADP
grants for sanitation development focusing to
hardcore poor. - 2004 National Sanitation Secretariat
established. - 2004 Scaling-up of Community Led Total
Sanitation (CLTS) Program
initiated in Bangladesh. - 2004 Sanitation Task Force established with
specific terms of reference.

- 2004 Sanitation month (In October) celebration
initiated in every year. - 2004 Sector Development Framework for Water
Supply and Sanitation developed. - 2005 Government of Bangladesh launched the
National - Sanitation Strategy.
- 2005 Pro-poor Strategy for Water and
Sanitation launched. - 2006 Bangladesh participated in the SACOSAN-II
in Pakistan. - 2007 Independent Monitoring and Evaluation
Committee established. - 2008 Demonstrated Eco-Toilets
- 2008 Bangladesh participated in the SACOSAN-III
in Delhi. - 2008 Bangladesh played active role in the
International Year of - Sanitation.
