  the events listed. Tell the children they will
  need to locate Key words and the year to
  create a timeline. The teacher will model
  creating one before the students complete their
  own. They may work in groups. Once facts are
  gathered, the students may write about Americas
  growth through the years. This may done as a
  whole class as well.

• In 1775 the Revolutionary War began (also known
  as the American War of Independence)
• July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was
  signed.
• In 1783 the Revolutionary War ended.
• The Constitution was signed on September 17,
  1787.
• The first US President George Washington takes
  office in 1789.
• George Washington left office in 1797.
• On July 4, 1876, the United States became 100
  years old. The celebration was called the
  Centennial.
• On July 4, 1976, the United States became 200
  years old. The celebration was called the Bi
  Centennial.
• Today is (the children will write today's date).
