• World Summit on Sustainable Development

  progress in the formulation and elaboration of
  national strategies for sustainable development

South Africa aspires to be a sustainable,
economically prosperous and self-reliant nation
state that safeguards its democracy by meeting
the fundamental human needs of its people, by
managing its limited ecological resources
responsibly for current and future generations,
and by advancing efficient and effective
integrated planning and governance through
national, regional and global collaboration

• NSSD identified 5 priority priorities with
  strategic goals for each priority
• Responding to Climate Change is one of the 5
  priorities of the NSSD
• There are four specific goals under priority 5
  that relate to the national climate change
  response

Climate Change Goals under Priority 5

• Decrease greenhouse gas emissions to levels
  required by science/in line with Cabinet-approved
  targets with particular emphasis on the energy
  sector, which accounts for over 70 of South
  Africas emissions
• Reduce dependency on fossil fuels and enhance
  security of electricity supply
