What is Imperialism?
  • One nation (mother country) directly or
    indirectly controls the government and/or economy
    of another country.
  • Direct rule - Mother Country runs all daily
    operations of the other country
  • Indirect rule - Mother Country allows local
    rulers to keep some traditional authority or
    power.

When did this all take place?
  • Imperialism started in 1800s and continued
    through early 1900s.
  • Also referred to as the new imperialism.

Who in Europe was involved?
  • France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands,
    Portugal, Spain, and Russia
  • And the largest empire builder was Great Britain

Where did Europe have Colonies?
  • China
  • India and the rest of Asia
