Northwest Ordinance of 1787

• This law created a government for the Northwest
  Territory (see map).
• It established the process by which territories
  could become states.
• (1) 5,000 adult men could then elect lawmakers
• (2) Territories had to have at least
  60,000 people before they could apply to become a
  state.
• (3) New states would be equal in power to old
  states.

C - Louisiana Purchase
Purchased by President Thomas Jefferson from
France for 15 million. Gained land from
Mississippi River to Rocky Mountains. It doubled
the size of the U.S. Gained control of the
Louisiana Territory

• Belief that the US should expand its territory
  from coast to coast (Atlantic Ocean to the
  Pacific Ocean)

• James K. Polk

• Elected President in 1844
• Added more territory to the US (by any means)
  than any other President
• Died 103 days after his single term ended
