- He showed many attributes of a good army leader

But then changed his mind because he knew the
Persian fleet wasnt far away, and they could
help him out in fighting against Alexander
- After Granicus most cities were afraid of
Alexander and the Macedonian army so they
surrendered to him. - Alexander was cruising through Miletus. The
governor said he would surrender.
Yes come on through Alexander! Take our city, I
wasnt that keen on ruling it anyway.

5But Alexander got there first
- Alexanders Greek fleet arrived first and
blockaded the harbour. So with no help from the
Persian boats who couldnt get in, Miletus fell
to Alexander easily.

- Some of the people fighting to defend Miletus
were Greek mercenaries.They escaped and occupied
the citadel - But this time instead of punishing the
Mercenaries Alexander offered to employ them for
the Macedonian army instead of killing them. This
kept the Greeks on his side. Alexander was moved
to pity by their courage and loyalty. (Arrian)

- After Miletus, Alexander did something unusual.
- He disbanded his fleet (sent home the Athenian
navy/boats) - Apart from 20 boats
The reasons Arrian gives for this are - He had
no money - He was in control of all the ports in
Asia Minor and thought he could keep the
Persian fleet out.

- Alexander took a considerable gamble by
sending his fleet away, which was a decision that
could have backfired. But he was very lucky. - He knew his strength lay in his army and that he
was weak in ships. Where as the Persians had a
very strong naval fleet and a weak ______. He
couldnt beat the Persians at sea so he wanted to
fight them on __________, this would be done by
preventing the Persian fleet from ever being able
