Title: The Five Themes of Geography
1The Five Themes of Geography
2 1. Location
The place where something is located on the
earth's surface. Two ways to determine location.
3 Absolute Location
The exact address or spot where a place is
found on the earth. (Example Latitude,
Longitude)
4X marks the spot.
5 Relative Location
Relative location describes a place in comparison
to other places around it . Example Sugar
Land is southwest of Houston, Texas.
62. Region
How the earth is divided for study.
- ? Geographers choose how they will classify the
world based on common characteristics. - ? Formal
- ? Functional
- ? Perceptual
7Formal Region
A place with similar attributes that might
include physical, political, economic, or
cultural characteristics. Examplepolitical
region such as a city, state or country. People
are governed by the same laws and the same
government.
8Functional Region
A place connected by movement between
places. Examplethe greater Houston Metropolitan
area, DFW. People move from home-work-home for
jobs, entertainment, etc.

11Perceptual Region
- A place defined by popular feelings and images
rather than by objective data. - Examplethe term heartland refers to a central
area where traditional values are believed (or
perceived) to be predominate. With a perceptual
region, the exact area that the region describes
can differ based on perceptions. There is NO
defined area.
123. Place
Place answers the question what is it
like? Place can be describe in two ways
Physical and Human
13 Physical Systems
Information about a location based on physical
features such as landforms, weather, climate, or
vegetation and how they interact with plant and
animal life.
14 Human Systems
Information about a location based on how people
shape the earth. Elements to considerpopulation,
religion, culture, and language.
154. Movement
The movement of goods, people and ideas from one
location to another.
? Goods can be moved by land, air, and water. ?
People can be physically moved--population trends
and location change. ? Ideas can be moved from
person to person, by the media, and through the
internet.
16 Human And Environment Interaction
How humans use, change, or live with their
environment.
There is ALWAYS an interaction
? Sometimes deliberate.
? Often unintentional.
