The A-B-C's of making a Quest

A. Pick a spot that is a special place for you
perhaps a unique natural or cultural feature of
your county.

B. Find out who owns the property and request
permission to make a Quest.

C. Make a few visits to the site to uncover its
details, and think about the best approaches to
making a Quest on the site. Where should it
start? And end?

D. Find people in your community who can teach
you more about your site - and invite them to
walk the land with you. Take good notes!

E. Decide on your Quest strategy a detailed
map Quest a map-less Quest a jumble Quest
(collecting words) a pict-o-Quest (no words-only
following pictures!). Or any combination. Use
your imagination and creativity-it's up to you!

F. List unique features at your site that you may
want to include in your Quest. Make a rough draft
of your clues and sketch out your map. Movement
clues lead from one place to the next teaching
clues tell the story of your site. Compose the
directions to your Quest starting
point.Example Turn around. Look up in the
sky, Can you find the opossum hanging high?
Pass between the two trees standing tall, Move
towards a flowing waterfall. Before 1950, the
Cumberland River flowed free, With temperate
waters 35 to 85 degrees. This natural habitat
was all a bustle, With paddlefish, banded
sculpins, 60 kinds of mussels!

G. Test your Quest with as many different people
as you can, and make appropriate edits.

K. Fill out the Kentucky Quest submission form
and send it in so that your Quest can be included
on the eeinkentucky.org website. If possible,
please send your map and clues electronically to
the Kentucky Environmental Education Council.
