Title: What is Arc Flash?

1
What is Arc Flash?
Electrical arc flash and arc blasts release
dangerous levels of heat energy, fire , molten
materials, vaporized solids that can be inhaled,
flying shrapnel and the rapid expansion of air,
all capable of causing severe and sometimes fatal
injuries.

American Safety Equipment 10 Steps to an
Effective Arc Flash Program
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 10
Step 7
Step 8
Step 9
Step 6
4
Step 1- Written Program
  • Assessment of the existing safety program
  • Written policies for working on energized
equipment such as Lockout rules, work permits,
    PPE requirements.
  • Establishment of an Arc Flash Mitigation Program

5
Step 2- Training
  • Training by a NEC/OSHA certified trainer.
  • Topics include
  • Hazards created by an Arc Flash or Arc Blast
  • Arc Flash regulations (NFPA 70 and 70E)
  • How to protect workers and comply with OSHA
  • Review of existing safety practices and resources
  • Appropriate safety related work practices
  • Reducing the risks of Arc Flash
  • Using the proper Personal Protective Equipment
    (PPE)

6
Step 3- Electrical Power System Analysis
  • Survey and data collection of all electrical
    panels.
  • Short circuit and duty calculations to ensure all
equipment is properly rated to withstand a short
    circuit current.
  • Protective device coordination (breakers, fuses,
etc.) to ensure that each device will work
    properly when needed.
  • Analyze power system for Incident energy, PPE
requirements, Flash Hazard Boundaries and Shock
    Hazard.
  • Installation of Arc Hazard labels Vinyl, UV
    rated

7
Step 4- One Line Drawings
  • Up-to-Date Electrical Drawings used to
  • Help workers identify equipment voltage levels
  • Identify system configurations that impact hazard
    calculations
  • Help plan future electrical system work
  • Determine alternate sources, capacitate back
    feeds and energized sources

8
Step 5- Additional Mitigation Reports
  • Submit report for PPE requirements
  • Submit protective device coordination study and
    recommendations to reduce arc exposure.

9
Step 6- Provide PPE
  • Over 40,000 PPE Products to choose from-
    including
  • Face and eye protection
  • Flame resistant clothing
  • Insulated electrical tools
  • PPE fit programs are available
  • Additional PPE training is also available

10
Step 7- Provide Hardware
  • Strategic partnerships with protective device
    suppliers.
  • Full line of Allen Bradley safety products
    available.
  • Thousands of fuse, safety and lockout products
    available.

11
Step 8- Installations
  • Installation of hardware including
  • Lockout devices
  • Protective devices fuses, disconnects, breakers
  • Panel barriers to lower the hazard rating of an
    enclosure
  • Safe work practices always ensured

12
Step 9- Electrical Safety Audits Maintenance
  • Annual electrical safety audits available
  • Electrical system maintenance cleaning, breaker
testing, insulation testing, and infrared testing.

13
Step 10- Continuing Education
  • All employees should receive training on safe
    work practices every year.
  • Building a safe work culture
  • Preparing workers to handle emergency situations
  • Employee training or train the trainer classes
    available.
