How Common is HIV?
  • An estimated one million people are currently
    living with HIV in the United States, with
    approximately 40,000 new infections occurring
    each year.

  • AIDS Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (deadly
    disease that interferes with the bodys natural
    ability to fight infection kills white blood
    cells)
  • HIV Human Immunodeficiency Virus (the virus that
    causes AIDS)

What Does HIV Do to the Body?
  • It kills the T-cells (white blood cells) that
    fight off infection
  • With an impaired immune system, a person with
    AIDS is susceptible to many infections that
    otherwise rarely occur.
  • Ex. Colds, Flu, etc.

  • Carrier An apparently healthy person who has HIV
    in the blood and can pass it to others.
  • You can be a carrier of HIV without having AIDS.
  • On average, carriers of HIV will have it for 10
    years before they show signs of AIDS
