2- The Vision
- Puente (Spanish for bridge) has provided tens
of thousands of students with a vision of success
and the tools to make that vision a reality. - By combining rigorous academic preparation
strategies with the support of local communities,
Puente has emerged as a national leader in
expanding opportunities for historically
underrepresented students, in providing
innovative professional development for school
and college faculty, and, in the words of one
researcher, as a major school reform effort.
3- The Mission
- To increase the number of educationally
underrepresented students who enroll in four-year
colleges and universities, earn their degrees,
and return to the community as leaders and
mentors of future generations. - ??
- Established in 1981, the program currently
serves students and faculty in 33 high schools
throughout California. The program has been at
James Logan High School since 2001.

- The Puente Counselor
- works with students throughout high school
- provides academic advising and monitoring of
4-year academic plan - helps students prepare for and complete the
college admission and financial aid application
process - plans events (field trips, parent workshops,
recruitment, fundraisers, etc.) - motivates students through fieldtrips to colleges
7English Curriculum Component
- The Puente English Teacher
- serves as students English teacher for 9th and
10th grade - incorporates Chicano/Latino and other ethnic
literature into the curriculum - guides students through preparing their Puente
Portfolios - explores concepts of community leadership with
students - co-facilitates Puente events with counselor
8Mentoring/Community Leadership Component
- Activities-based curriculum in which students
- explore the concepts of mentoring and community
- are exposed to and explore a variety of career
options - develop their leadership skills and learn the
value and benefits of contributing to the
community through community/volunteer work - 9th grade student Leadership Conference at UC
Berkeley - 10th graders participate in National Youth
Service Day

- Puente parent responsibilities include
- attending Puente parent meetings and activities
