    townspeople didnt listen to him
  • Unfairly jailed a Salem minister for being in
    debt for his wifes funeral

  • Accuses her midwives of witchery
  • Grief has made him/her a bit crazy
  • Believes witchcraft is to blame for daughters
    behavior

    Bailey from being the minister of Salem and

    made Salemites resentful)
  • Brings proof to the court of his wifes innocence

Giles Corey (5)
  • Provides only comic relief of the play
  • Has been to court so many times that he is as
    good as a proper lawyer
  • Literally pressed to death because he will not
    answer the indictment of his witchcraft
  • Foolishly questions his wifes reading habits
  • Final sacrifice is for his family so that they
    may have his land as inheritance

  • Grows braver after she is caught up in the
    accusations
  • Gives Goody Proctor a poppit
  • Accused of sending up a bird with her spirit in
    the courtroom
  • Proud to be an official of the court

Reverend Hale (4)
  • Considers himself an educated, intelligent man
    who uses logic and books to determine witchcraft
  • Changes dramatically from believing there is
    witchcraft to believing many have been wrongly
    accused
  • Seeks out John and Goody Proctor to inquire about

  • Pleads with John Proctor and the other accused to
    confess to their sins to save their lives
