  • Pontiacs War was brief but convinced the British
    to pass the Proclamation of 1763. Which made it
    illegal for Americans to settle west of the
    Appalachian Mountains.

  • To enforce the Proclamation, the British sent
    10,000 troops. These troops were stationed in
    cities along the Atlantic coast.

  • Following the French and Indian War, Britain was
    deeply in debt.

  • 1764, the British pass the Sugar Act (Tax on
    Molasses)
  • 1765, the British pass the Stamp Act (Tax on
    legal documents)

  • Delegates from 9 colonies met in New York City in
    the Stamp Act Congress. They drew up a
    petition, but the English Parliament ignored it.

  • The colonists then agreed to boycott British
    goods.
  • In 1766, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act, but
    it reserved the right to pass taxes.
