Title: Prepare and monitor anaesthesia in animals

1
Prepare and monitor anaesthesia in animals
  • MASK CHAMBER INDUCTION

2
Masks
3
Face Masks (cones)
  • Masks are used to provide oxygen in comatose or
recovering animals, or for the delivery of
volatile anaesthetics when intubation is not
    performed.

4
Mask Induction
  • For animals difficult to IV
  • Needs to fit well to avoid pollution
  • Need high flow rate to flush out CO2

5
Mask induction with Circle system
  • High flow rates 2-4 litres/min
  • Vaporizer fully on
  • 25 higher than normal
  • Induction time usually 3 to 5 min

6
Mask induction with T-Piece
  • Usual flow rate
  • 200 mL/kg/min
  • Vaporiser at 3

7
Advantages of mask induction
  • Do not damage the airway
  • Produce smooth inductions when patients are
    depressed or heavily sedated.

8
Disadvantages of Mask induction
  • Expensive
  • Increased patient stress
  • Increased anaesthetic pollution

9
Induction Chamber
10
Chamber induction
  • Useful in cats exotic pets
  • Sedation should be present, otherwise inductions
    may be violent
  • Pollution is a problem when the chamber is opened.

11
Chamber
  • For fractious animals
  • High pollution risk
  • Connect to scavenger
  • Open box near exhaust fan?
