  • Ch 5.5 Adding Subtracting Like Fractions

2
Bellwork
  • Divide the following rational numbers. Express
    the product in simplest form.
  • 1 ? 1
  • 2 10
  • -1 ½ ? ¼
  • 4k ? 25
  • 5 2k

3
Before we begin
  • Please take out your foldable and get ready to
    work
  • Ok...so far we have done multiplying and dividing
    fractions
  • As a quick reviewraise your hand if you can tell
me the rule for dividing and multiplying
    fractions
  • Today we will look at adding like fractions
  • Raise your hand if you can tell me what a like
    fraction is.

4
Objective
  • Students will add and subtract like fractions

5
Like Fractions
  • Fractions are considered alike if the have the
    same denominator.
  • You CANNOT add or subtract fractions if they do
    not have a common denominator!

6
Adding Subtracting Like Fractions
  • The rule If the fractions have a common
denominator you can add or subtract the fractions
by adding or subtracting the numerator and
placing it over the common denominator
  • Example
  • 1 3 4 1
  • 8 8 8 2

7
Your Turn
  • On your foldable add or subtract the following
  • 1 5
  • 7 7
  • 11 - 3
  • 14 14
  • 6r 2r
  • 11 11

8
Adding Subtracting Mixed Numbers
  • There are 2 methods to handle adding
subtracting mixed numbers with like fractions.
  • Handle the fractions separately from the whole
numbers and then add the results together
  • Or
  • Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions
    then add or subtract

9
Example - Method 1
  • 6 5 1 1
  • 8 8
  • Set up the problem like this
  • 6 5
  • 8
  • 1 1
  • 8
  • 7 6
  • 8

Add the whole numbers
Add the Fractions

Example Method 2
  • 6 5 1 1
  • 8 8
  • Set up the problem like this
  • 6 5 53
  • 8 8
  • 1 1 9
  • 8 8
  • 62 7 6
  • 8 8

Convert to improper fractions
Convert to improper fractions
Then convert to a mixed number
