2Identification of a Need
- PROBLEM Inconvenience for drivers in below
freezing temperatures - NEED An automatic device that will clear the
windshield of frost and ice
3Problem Definition
- Designing a mechanism that will eliminate solid
precipitation on windshield - We want the device to be automatic to reduce
driver inconvenience
4Search
- Triplex Safety Glass Co. has developed a
windshield film called Hyviz - Visteon/Southwall collaborate to design a
windshield film called XIR - Nano-tubes
- Rear window defrosters
- Ice scrapper
- Garage
- Solar cells and batteries
- Temperature Sensors
5Constraints
- Visibility
- Size
- Battery - must fit in original car design
- Safety must be able to crumble with glass
6Criteria
- Cost of production verse profit
- Types of materials used
- Appearance of exterior parts
- Automatic Device
7Alternate Solutions
- Ice Scraper
- Garage
- Powered by car battery
- Solar Powered Device (Using either conductive
film or nano-tubes)
8Analysis Ice Scraper
- PROS CONS
- Save Loss of time
- Expenditure of personal Energy
- Out in the cold
9Analysis - Garage
- PROS CONS
- No frost/snow Expensive to construct
- Saves time Not everyone has a garage May
not be room for all needed cars
10Analysis Car Battery Powered Device
- PROS CONS
- Lower cost May drain the battery
- Saves time

11Analysis Solar Powered Device
- PROS CONS
- Decreases fuel emissions Cost
- Saves gas
- Saves time

12Specifications - Solar Power Design
13Hyviz Data
- Want a film with a resistance of .52 ohm/square
- Wv2/r
- Wtotal power in watts
- Vsupply voltage
- rresistance load in in ohms
- WV2/r(sq)d2
- ddepth of windshield between busbars
- r(sq)ohms/square area
- Wpower density in watts/in2
- Vsupply voltage
14Graph of defrosting times at 0 ºF
15Specifications of Hyviz Film
Film thickness is around 3000 Angstroms With
this thickness there is around 80 transmission
of visible light through the windshield. Any
power density over .5 W/in2 needs a temperature
sensor to avoid overheating and to conserve power
16Decision
- To satisfy the Constraints Criteria as best as
possible while considering the Identification of
the Need, we will choose the Solar Powered Device - Automatic system
- Saves time
- Fits all existing vehicle qualities
- Not an unrealistic production cost
17Communication
- Commercials
- Promote in higher priced cars (BMW, Mercedes,
Bentley and Cadillac) - Promote in colder climate areas
- Introduce at Auto Shows
