Highway Transportation System
  • Highway Transportation System (HTS) is regulated
by federal, state and local government agencies.
  • Parts-motor vehicle, streets and highway,
drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.Goal is to
enable people and goods to move from 1 place to
    another safely.

3
3 Categories
  • 1. Highway concepts and designs
  • 2. Roadways-4 million miles of roadways
  • 3. People-Sharing road with 194 million drivers

4
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety
Act-
  • Requires automakers to build safety features i.e.
    safety belts, shatterproof windows etc.

5
The National Highway Safety Act
  • Establishes guidelines for state motor vehicle
safety programs. Each state sets its own
    statutes.

6
RISK IS REAL!!
  • The chances of you being involved in a collision
    are 1 in 9.
  • Seriously disabled 1 in 83.. 34 of
    deaths(15-20)occur through motor vehicle crashes.
15-20 yr old make up only 7 of drivers and they
are involved in 14 of crashes.
  • 85 of deaths occur in first collision

7
How to reduce risks
  • 1. Keep your vehicle in top condition
  • 2. Anticipate actions of others
  • 3. Take steps to protect yourself and others
  • 4. Drive only when you are in good physical and
    mental condition.
  • 5. Develop your skills better

8
  • What is the best type of vehicle to have to
    reduce your risk of injuries?

9
Answer
  • One that is big in size
  • Well maintained
  • ABS brakes
  • Airbags
  • Seatbelts
  • Good tires
  • Inspected

10
3 Key components for Safe and Responsible Driving
  • 1. Visibility-what you see behind the wheel, how
well you see it and others see you. Driving at
night is dangerous for all drivers.
  • 2. Time-speeding and stopping
  • 3. Space-distance between cars and preventing
    collisions
  • Margin of space?

11
What can you gain from a Drivers Education
Course?
  • understand how emotions and your personality can
    affect your driving
  • understand how to maneuver and keep control over
    your vehicle
  • know how all drugs can impair your driving and
the penalties associated with its use.
  • 4. know the rules, laws ,signs and signals and
    markings

    vehicle
  • 6. know how your vehicle works

These are factors that affect your ability to
drive safely

  • 2. You cannot be injured or cause injury while
    driving.
  • 3. Taking medicine
  • 4. Emotions
  • 5. Drugs use

14
What factors can cause young drivers to be
over-represented in crash statistics?
  • 1. Lacking experience
  • 2. Driving at dangerous times-night
  • 3. Transporting passengers-pack the car!
  • 4. Driving differently-more speed, less likely to
    wear seatbelts dont pay attention.
  • Drive at a safe speed depending on the conditions

15
Mobility
  • The basic costs are grouped into two categories
  • 1 Crash-MV hits another vehicle,pedestrian,
    animal, cyclist or fixed object.
  • 2. Non-Crash costs
  • a)Operating costs-maintain vehicle ex.gas or oil
  • b)Fixed costs-purchase price, insurance and
    licensing fees.
  • c)Environmental costs-car pollution
  • 230 Billion dollars are spent in motor-vehicle
    crashes.

You will have a quiz on Chapter 1 tomorrow.
