Title: Persuasive Speeches

1
Persuasive Speeches
  • Communication Skills

2
  • If you show us how to put a car engine together,
thats a demonstration speech. If you explain to
us how the car engine works, thats an
informative speech. If you then convince us to
buy the car, thats a persuasive speech.

3
What is a persuasive speech?
  • Asks your audience to buy something that you
are selling (product, belief, attitude, idea,
    etc.).
  • Asks the audience to do something based on the
    information you present.

4
Persuasive speaking demands
  • Convince your audience to believe as you do.
  • Influence them to cause some sort of directed
    action.

5
Analyze the Audience
  • You must convince the audience that your idea
and/or plan is the best option and the right way
    to think/act.
  • People act and react on the basis of what they
want, how they think, and how they feel, so
remember the three types of appeals!

6
The Supportive Audience
  • Friendly
  • Easiest to address because the members are ready
to support and promote your ideas
  • Generally does not need a great deal of
    information

7
The Uncommitted Audience
  • Neutral
  • Members need information to make up their minds
  • Unbiased (objective)

8
The Indifferent Audience
  • Apathetic (dont care)
  • Can appear openly bored
  • Captive audience being forced to be in
    attendance
  • Ideas
  • Jar them into paying attention
  • Show how your message is applicable to their
    lives
  • Information is not enough!

9
The Opposed Audience
  • Hostile members do not support you or your
    message
  • Show a willing to compromise
  • Disclaimer tells the audience what you are NOT
saying or lets them know that you dont consider
    yourself the expert

10
Remember your three types of appeals
  • Logical offer an organized, clearly defined
speech containing solid reasoning and valid
    evidence
  • Emotional arouse feelings, such as anger,
    disgust, and compassion
  • Personal wind trust through honesty,
    competency, and credibility

11
The United Approach
  • Use all three types of appeal!
  • What works for one member of the audience wont
    necessarily work for all members.
  • Spreads out your research.
  • Strengthens your arguments.

12
Your Persuasive Speech
  • 3 5 minutes
  • You may choose the topic, but it must be approved
    by me.
  • You may want to extend your informational speech
and persuade us of an issue or idea relevant to
    that same topic.
  • You must convince us of something!
