RATS
  • Scientific Name Rattus norvegicus
  • Common Name Rat
  • Kingdom- Animalia
  • Phylum- Chordata
  • Subphylum- Vertebrata
  • Class- Mammalia
  • Order- Rodentia

2
Rat Dissection
  • Before cutting you will need to carefully examine
    describe each of the following
  • Eyes Whiskers
  • Nostrils Mouth/Teeth/Tongue
  • Feet/Nails Tail
  • Before moving on, determine if your rat is male
or female and have your teacher verify this.

3
Rat Dissection
  • You may need to pin your rat at this
  • time.
  • This would need to be done at the
  • wrist and ankle regions.
  • Refer to the diagram to see the path
  • you will need to take to remove the
  • skin from the abdominal and
  • thoracic areas.

REMOVING SKIN
  • It is helpful to
  • use the forceps
  • and scissors to
  • remove the skin.

REMOVING SKIN
  • Do not cut too deep. You only want to remove the
    skin from the muscle.
  • If you cut too deep you will cut through the
muscle and into the abdominal and thoracic
    cavities.
  • You will see a thick brown liquid if you cut too
    deep.

Rat Dissection
REMOVING SKIN
  • You will need to
  • pin the skin out of
  • the way for the
  • rest of the lab.
