Job Planning
  • Supervisor highlights the need for staying with
    plan up front.
  • Plan B for dealing with the unexpected
  • Good Planning - Safe Job - adversely affected
    by rule breakers.

Day to day Personal Planning
  • Get buried in what needs to be done on a daily
    basis.
  • Need to think longer term - Diary of events over
    several days
  • Plan site visits.
  • Write extra time in the plan for the unexpected.
  • Learn about effective delegation

  • Is there time for O.J.T.?
  • Emphasise safety by not making compromises in
    favour of production
  • Search for solutions that maintain and improve
    safety and production levels
  • Site visits to collect comments from crews and
    let them show you where problem areas are

Evaluation and Improvement
  • How did the job go?
  • Can we make improvements in safety and
    production?
  • Use the proposals for improvement in future
    planning.

Responding to Technical Problems
  • Good supervisor uses experience to prevent
    problems
  • Encourage the crew to recognise when things are
    going wrong and highlight them
  • Use real problems encountered as a coaching
    opportunity
  • Problems can be used to develop training
    programmes
  • Share your experience with other supervisors

Observation
  • Get someone from the crew or someone from
    another group and agree
  • What are you going to look at and why
  • What you are going to do about it
