Brain Mapping (Quantitative EEG) -Emerging
Clinical Applications
  • J. Lucas Koberda, MD, PhD
  • Tallahassee Neuro-Balance Center
  • Clinical Assistant Professor
  • Florida State University- College of Medicine
  • Collaborating psychotherapists-
  • Dr. Donna St. Hillier and Barry L. Jones, MSW

2
Definitions
  • Electroencephalogram(EEG)-brain related
electrical potentials recorded from the scalp
  • Brain Mapping (QEEG)-Mathematical processing of
digitally recorded EEG in order to highlight
    specific waveform components and better
    visualization of the EEG tracing
  • Neurotherapy-set of neurophysiologicaly based
    methods for modifying brain functions-includes
    EEG-biofeedback (neurofeedback) and other
modalities as trans-cranial magnetic and electric
stimulation and deep brain stimulation (useful
especially in tremor and Parkinsons disease),
    and electroconvulsive therapy -ECT

Definitions
-EEG- Delta deep sleep band-1-4 Hz -EEG-Theta
drowsy, foggy band-4-8 Hz -EEG-Alpha alert
band-between 8-12 Hz -Sensory-Motor
Rhythm-SMR-12-15Hz -EEG-Beta alert/focused high
band-12-40 Hz

Brodmann cortical areas 1909
  • Described by Dr. Brodmann approximately 100 years
ago but still widely used in research and
clinical practice which links specific cortical
    brain areas to particular functions

6
Clinical usefulness of QEEG in general neurology
practice
  • 150 subsequent QEEGs were analyzed for a
    potential clinical usefulness in general
    neurology practice (defined as either
contributing to diagnosis or medical decision
    making or treatment).
  • Most cases were divided to 5 groups-seizure, TBI,
    HA, dementia, or behavioral problems
  • 95 of patients-QEEG contributed to diagnosis or
    treatment.
  • Koberda-Neuroscience Letters-August 2011

7
Need for other modalities
  • Medications are not always effective-medication
    resistance
  • Staffing the turkey with Prazac is not always the
    best option
  • Consider Neurofeedback
