Title: The Function of Organelles

1
The Function of Organelles
  • Occupations of Organized Organelles

2
Cell Wall
  • Found only in plant cells
  • Gives support to the cell
  • Made of cellulose fibers

3
Cell Membrane
  • ALL cells have one
  • Separates whats inside from environment
  • Made of phospholipids

4
Nucleus
  • Found only in eukaryotes
  • Contains DNA
  • The info needed to make a cell
  • Is covered by 2 membranes
  • Nucleolus in middle
  • Makes ribosomes

5
Ribosomes
  • Found in ALL cells
  • Make proteins
  • More ribosomes in a cell than any other organelle

6
Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Delivery system
  • Delivers proteins made by ribosomes throughout
    cell
  • Two Parts
  • Rough
  • Has ribosomes
  • Smooth
  • No ribosomes

7
Mitochondria
  • Powerhouse of the cell
  • Sugar is broken down for energy
  • Energy released by mitochondria is stored in ATP
  • Most of cells ATP made here
  • Animal cells cant make own food so we need these
to break down sugar for energy

8
Chloroplasts
  • Found only in plant cells
  • Contain chlorophyll
  • Photosynthesis happens in these
  • Traps sunlight and ?sugar
  • The sugar is then broken down by mitochondria

9
Golgi Complex
  • Packages and distributes proteins
  • Proteins are sent here from the ER
  • Then a piece of Golgi membrane encloses the
protein, pinches off, and is sent to another part
of the cell or out of it

10
Vesicles
  • A bubble that surrounds some material in the cell
    in order to move it
  • Lysosomes
  • Destroy, get rid of waste, or protect
  • Vacuole
  • Digests
  • Stores water
  • Plants have a large central vacuole
