5Introduction to PowerPoint
- PowerPoint is an Office application that can help
you create a professional presentation by helping
you illustrate your ideas using slides, outlines,
speakers notes, and audience handouts. - A presentation can include text, clip art,
graphs, tables, and charts.

- PowerPoint presentations are usually viewed using
a projector on a screen, but you can also use a
television monitor or an additional monitor
connected to your computer. - You can also deliver a PowerPoint presentation by
broadcasting it or publishing it to the Internet.
7Starting PowerPoint
- Like other Office applications, you start
PowerPoint by clicking the Start button,
selecting Programs, and clicking Microsoft
PowerPoint 2003.
8Opening and Viewing an Existing Presentation
- When you want to open an existing presentation,
choose the presentation from the list in the
PowerPoint task pane under the heading Open a
Presentation. - If the presentation you want to open is not in
the list, click the More folder. This option
displays the Open dialog box.

- To view the presentation, select View Show from
the Slide Show menu on the menu bar. - The presentation opens on the screen and you can
view it as you would when you present it. - Some slides include animation, which is a text or
picture that have motion.

- Click the Start button to open the Start menu.
- Point to Programs, point to Microsoft Office
PowerPoint 2003. - The PowerPoint opening window appears.
- In the task pane, click the More link.

- In the Open dialog box, display the disk drive
that contains the data files for IP Step 1-2, and
then click Open. - Click View Show from the Slide Show menu.

- Press the right arrow key or click the mouse to
trigger the animation on the first slide. A
picture of a tornado appears on the screen and
the word Tornados becomes animated. You should
also hear a thunderstorm. - Click your mouse to advance to the next slide.
Notice that the animation on the slide advances
automatically.

The title of this slide appears automatically.
Click your mouse again to trigger the next text
line. Continue to click to advance the slides,
using the messages to guide you through the

14Saving the Presentation
- To save a new presentation, choose Save As from
the File menu or click the Save button on the
Standard toolbar to display the Save As dialog
box. - Save this document as Tornado, followed by your
initials.

- You can view a presentation four different ways
using options on the View menu - Normal
- Slide Sorter
- Slide Show
- Notes Page.
16Normal View
- You have been working in Normal view. This view
has four panes the slide preview and outline
panes, the task pane, the slide pane, and the
notes pane.
17Using the Slide Preview and Outline Pane
- To work with the slides in a presentation,
PowerPoint displays all your slides in the
outline pane on the left side of your screen. - This pane has two tabs at the top, the Outline
tab and the Slides tab. - Outline tab displays all the text on your slides
in outline form.

- The Slides tab displays your slides as small
pictures or thumbnails. - To switch between the modes, click the Slides tab
or the Outline tab.

- If it is not already selected, click the Outline
tab on the left side of the window. - Use the scroll bar to scroll down to slide 9.
- Highlight the number 75,000 in the second bullet
point. Key 80,000. - Click the Slide tab.
20Using the Task Pane
- The task pane on the right side of the screen
contain common tasks that you use frequently when
creating a presentation. - The task pane contains tasks to help you create a
new presentation, select a layout, choose a
design template, choose a color scheme, choose an
animation scheme, and et al.

- Click the Design button on the Formatting
toolbar. The Slide Design task pane opens. - Scroll to view the different design templates.
- Click Color Schemes and Animation Schemes to view
the templates available for your use. Click
Design Templates again to return to the Design
Templates task pane.
22Using the Slide Pane
- The slide pane in the workbench for PowerPoint
presentation. It displays one slide at a time
and is useful for adding text or modifying the
slides appearance. - It displays your slides in an area large enough
to work on the slide easily.

- Using the scroll bar to scroll down to slide 9 if
it is not already displayed. - Select all of the text marked by bullets. The
text edit box appears around the text. - Using the Formatting toolbar to change the text
size to 32.
24Notes Page View
- The Notes Page view displays your slides on the
top portion of the page, with the speaker notes
for each slide in the notes pane on the bottom of
the page. - To add speaker notes, click in the notes pane and
begin keying or you can open the View menu and
choose Notes Page.
25Slide Sorter View
- Slide Sorter view displays miniature versions of
the slides on the screen so that you can move and
arrange slides easily by dragging. - The Slide Sorter toolbar that helps you with
timing, transitions, and animation appears when
you switch to this view.

- Click the Slide Sorter View button.
- Click slide 9 so that it is outlined in bold.
- Click and drag slide 9 between slide 5 and slide
6. A line appears between the two slides.
Release the mouse button. Slide 9 moves to
become slide 6 and all other slides are moved
down and renumbered.

- Click slide 1.
- Click the Slide Show button on the lower-left
corner of the screen. Slide 1 appears on the
screen. - Click the mouse to advance through all the
slides.

- In Slide Show view, you can run your presentation
on the computer as if it were a slide projector
to view how it will look.
31Using Menus and Toolbars
- When you first use PowerPoint, the short menu
displays only the basic commands. To see an
expanded menu with all the commands, click the
arrows at the bottom of the menu. - In Normal view, the three toolbars displayed on
the screen by default are Standard, Formatting,
and Drawing, respectively.
32Deleting Slides
- A presentation you create using the AutoContent
Wizard includes a predetermined number of slides
based on the type of presentation you choose. - If you decide that the slide does not fit your
presentation, you can easily delete it.

- If necessary, click the Slide Sorter View button.
- Hold down the Control key your keyboard, and
click slides 12 and 14 so that they are outlined
with a bold line. Right-click on either slide to
display a shortcut menu. - Click Delete Slide from the shortcut menu.

for taking notes. - You can choose to print all slides, only the
current slides or any combo thereof.
