Questions and Answers
1. Why cant women be ignored?
Because of the huge number of them.
2. Does the singer of this song agree with Mao
Zedong that women hold up half the sky?
Yes. Here she gives us the voice of women, which
is as loud and brave as the roar of a lion. She
sings of how she is determined not to go back to
playing a traditional womans role and pretending
to like it. And it is no good trying to persuade
her otherwise, for she has heard all the old
arguments too often. And I know too much to go
back and pretend Cause Ive heard it all before

Questions and Answers
3. What happened in the past?
Women were held down in the past. And
Ive been down there on the floor But no one is
going to hold them back any longer. No ones ever
gonna keep me down again
4. What happens to women if you try to break
their will?
You can bend them but you never break them. It
only serves to make them more determined to
achieve their final goal. Their suffering and
struggle has made them wise and strong.
You can bend but never break me Cause
it only serves to make me More determined

Questions and Answers
5.What is the current situation of womens
liberation?
Women are supporting one another, standing side
by side, toe to toe, but they still have a long
way to go. They are only in the early stages of
their struggle to get what they want and to get
men to change their ideas. But Im still an
embryo With a long, long way to go Until I make

6BR2.1
Feminism
In the 1960s feminism (the belief that
women and men are equal in abilities and should
have equal rights and opportunities) became the
subject of intense debate when the womens
liberation movement encouraged women to reject
their traditional supporting role and to demand
equal status and equal rights with men in areas
such as employment and pay. Since then the
gender gap between the sexes has been reduced.
However, the battle between feminist and
traditional views of a womans role continues. It
is widely accepted by younger people that women
should, if they wish, be allowed to develop their
careers and not give up work when they have a
family.
II
7BR2.1-1
Feminism has brought about many changes in
the English language. Many words for job titles
that included man have been replaced, for
example police officer is used instead of
policeman and chairperson for chairman.
He is now rarely used to refer to a person when
the person could be either a man or a woman. The
title Ms is used for women instead of Miss or
Mrs, since it does not show whether a woman is
married or not.

The Brooklyn Bridge
13BR2.2.1
The Brooklyn Bridge, built in 1883, spans the
East River in New York City. The bridge connects
the densely populated boroughs of Brooklyn and
Manhattan. The bridge was designed by the
American engineer John Augustus Roebling, and
construction was begun in 1869 by his son
Washington Augustus Roebling. When the Brooklyn
Bridge was opened for use on May 24, 1883, it was
the longest suspension bridge in the world. The
main suspension span is 486m (1595ft) long the
average height above the river is 41m (133ft)
and the overall length is 2065m (6775ft).
Numerous techniques devised by Roebling made this
bridge possible, including the use of caissons
(watertight chambers) for building the bridges
stone towers and of steel wire for the cables. To
allow tall-masted sailing ships to pass under
II
14BR2.2.2
bridge, Roebling positioned the road deck 36.6m
(120ft) above the water. Stone towers, which rose
to a height of 84.3m (276.5ft), made this high
roadway possible and made the bridge the tallest
structure in New York at its completion. The span
from tower to tower of just over 486m (1,595ft)
and the span between cable anchors of 1,054m
(3,456ft) constituted a remarkable achievement.
The Brooklyn Bridge in New York City perhaps best
demonstrates the scale of building made possible
by the rapid expansion of American industry and
by American ambition. The expression selling the
Brooklyn Bridge to somebody means tricking
somebody in a deal.

A Land of Great Diversity
II
It is a transitional state both
physically and culturally. It varies from the
wooded mountains of the more humid east to the
sparse and dry country of the western plains. The
changing landscape of Oklahoma is reflected in
its economic activities, which range from the
raising of wheat in western and central areas to
the lumbering that is carried on in the Ouachita
Mountains in the southeastern part of the state.
21BR2.3.3
The Origin of Its Name
The name Oklahoma was derived by
combining the Choctaw words for red and
people. Part of the states area had been
originally put aside for settlement of Native
Americans and was known as Indian Territory. The
other section of the state, Oklahoma Territory,
was gradually opened for white settlement toward
the end of the 19th century. Oklahoma earned its
nickname, the Sooner State, from the fact that
some land-hungry settlers, known as the Sooners,
jumped the starting gun that was to open one
section of the territory to settlers and rushed
in to take land before they were legally entitled
to do so.
II
22BR2.3.4
Political position
Oklahoma was admitted to the Union on
November 16, 1907, as the 46th state. Resulting
from the combination of Indian and Oklahoma
territories, the state retains marked features of
its Native American heritage in the makeup of its
population and the Indian place-names in the
state.

John Milton
John Milton (16081674) is an English poet,
whose rich, dense verse was a powerful influence
on succeeding English poets, and whose prose was
devoted to the defense of civil and religious
liberty. Milton is often considered the greatest
English poet after Shakespeare. The epic poem
Paradise Lost (1667), Miltons masterpiece and
one of the greatest poems in world literature,
dramatizes the Biblical account of humanitys
banishment from Paradise. Milton also wrote a
sequel to Paradise Lost, called Paradise Regained
(1671), in which Jesus triumphantly resists
Satan and regains the Paradise lost by Adam
and Eve.

Introductory Remark
Whether you like it or not, women in many
cases have to take up more responsibilities than
men. Thats why the author, Adrienne Popper,
writes Men have generally been assured that
achieving their hearts desires would be a piece
of cake. Women, of course, have always believed
that we cant have our cake and eat it too. What
she means is that men are encouraged to achieve
their goals in life, but women know that they can
only achieve some goals at the expense of other
goals. However, there are superwomen in the real
world who are able to perform great deeds and to
enjoy their lives at the same time. It is they
who give the average woman the courage to go on,
that is to say, the belief in superwomen
encourages average women to achieve their goals.

Text Analysis
There are three main ways of achieving
coherence in this text the use of transitional
words and phrases, the repetition of key words
and phrases, and the use of parallel structure.
1. Try to find transitional words like
but, however, yet, especially in
Paragraphs 8 to 10. 2. The most
striking feature of this text is the repetition
of key words and phrases. Try to
scan the whole text to find the
following key words and phrases and get the
writers purpose of repeating them.
36GR-4.2
1) Brooklyn Bridge or the bridge
The occurrences of the phrases Brooklyn Bridge or
the bridge weave the essay into a coherent piece
and the appearance of the word bridge coincides
with a new part of the text.
2) synonyms of superwoman
Synonyms like superwoman, superwomen, heroine,
supersisters, and superheroines appear five times
to remind readers of the topic of this essay.
37GR-4.3
3) in her spare time
The five instances where the phrase in her spare
time is used emphasize the amazing fact that some
super-capable women can still find spare time in
their tight schedule.
4) synonymous phrases of fairy tale
Synonymous phrases like modern fairy tale,
fantasy, dream, incredible achievements, and
extraordinary deeds point out the fact that many
people do not believe in superwomen stories.
38GR-4.4
3. There is no strictly parallel structure in
this essay. However, some may regard the
comparison between my daily struggle and the
achievements of Kate L., the daughter of a
politician, the woman executive, etc. as parallel.
39GR-5.1.11
Group Discussion
1. What does the Brooklyn Bridge mean?
The Brooklyn Bridge means something impossible or
an incredible story. Folktales about people who
are so gullible as to be persuaded by confidence
tricksters to buy well-known landmarks are
numerous in America and elsewhere.
2. The first three parts may well be grouped
under one topic. Whats it?
I am fascinated by superwomen.
40GR-5.1.12
3. How does the author explain the
difficulties to be a superwoman?
By personal experiences. 1) She is unable to get
her act together. 2) She can almost expect
something to go wrong as soon as she sets
to work. 3) Everything on her schedule might take
much more time than is expected. 4) She
usually feels exhausted after a busy day.

Womens Liberation
Many People agree with the ideas and
goals of womens liberation. They feel that women
ought to be considered equal to men in every way.
They feel that a woman should be able to decide
to stay home and raise a family, or to stay home
and not raise a family, or to go out and work, or
to have a job outside the home and a family as
well. They feel a woman should be able to do
anything that she wants to do and can do. Other
people are opposed to womens liberation. They do
not think that women should have the same jobs
and the same pay as men. They believe that men
should do all the important work. They feel that
women belong at home, taking care of men and
children. Many husbands do not want their wives
to work outside the home. Some women agree with
these men. People who believe in
51AR-3-12
womens liberation feel that it is bad for a
woman to remain at home. They believe that work
in the home is important and should be respected.
But they want to make sure that a woman works at
home because she wants to, and not because she
cant get a job outside the home, or because she
does not believe that she can do anything useful
in her community. The womens
liberation movement is trying to give women a
chance to show what they can do. Perhaps a woman
will find the cure for our most serious disease.
Perhaps a woman will solve the energy crisis,
perhaps women and men, working together, will be
able to accomplish important things better and
sooner than men would if they were working alone.
If the womens liberation movement is successful,
we will have a chance to find out.

In this enlightened age, there still exist a
certain number of men who view women as
second-class citizens. They go on maintaining the
fiction that women, who are inferior, unreliable
and irrational, depend too little on cool
reasoning and too much on intuition to arrive at
decisions. Hence, men almost entirely control
top-level negotiations between countries,
businesses and banks. Nevertheless, women
have shown their excellence and superiority in
any job you care to name. As farmers, workers,
drivers, doctors, politicians and scientists and
even presidents of countries they have often put
men to shame. They are so conscientious,
industrious and persevering that they frequently
succeed brilliantly in all walks of life in
addition to bearing and rearing children.
Although the hard-fought battle for recognition
that women are equal and often superior to men in
almost every field has been won, it is by no
means over. Further effort should be exerted to
convert some mens contemptuous and hostile
attitude towards women. The world can grow more
peaceful and flourishing only by consummate
hand-in-hand cooperation of men and women.

77Article1-S
IM GOING TO BUY THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE
Not long ago I received an alumni bulletin
from my college. It included a brief item about a
former classmate Kate L. teaches part-time at
the University of Oklahoma and is assistant
principal at County High School. In her
spare time she is finishing her doctoral
dissertation and the final drafts of two books,
and she still has time for tennis and horse
riding with her daughters. Four words in that
description undid me in her spare time. A friend
said that if I believed everything in the report,
she had a bridge in Brooklyn shed like to sell
me.
78Article2_S
My friends joke hit home. What an idiot
Id been! I resolved to stop thinking about
Kates incredible accomplishments and to be
suitably skeptical of such stories in the
future. But like a dieter who devours a
whole box of cookies in a moment of weakness, I
found my resolve slipping occasionally. In weak
moments Id comb the pages of newspapers and
magazines and consume success stories by the
pound. My favorite superwomen included a
politicians daughter who cared for her
two-year-old and a newborn while finishing law
school and managing a company a practicing
pediatrician with ten children of her own and a
television anchorwoman, mother of two
preschoolers, who was studying for a masters
degree.
79Article3_S
One day, however, I actually met a
superwoman face to face. Just before Christmas
last year, my work took me to the office of a
woman executive of a national corporation. Like
her supersisters, she has a husband, two small
children and, according to reports, a spotless
apartment. Her life runs as precisely as a Swiss

On a shelf behind her desk that day were at
least a hundred jars of strawberry jam, gaily
tied with red-checked ribbons. The executive and
her children had made the jam and decorated the
jars, which she planned to distribute to her
staff and visiting clients.
When, I wondered aloud, had she found the
time to complete such an impressive holiday
project? I should have known better than to ask.
The answer had a familiar ring in her spare time.
81Article5_S
On the train ride home I sat with a jar of
strawberry jam in my lap. It reproached me the
entire trip. Other women, it seemed to say, are
movers and shakers--not only during office hours,
but in their spare time as well. What, it asked,
do you accomplish in your spare time?
I would like to report that I am using my
extra moments to complete postdoctoral studies in
physics, to develop new theories of tonal harmony
for piano and horn, and to bake cakes and play
baseball with my sons. The truth of the matter
is, however, that I am by nature completely
unable to get my act together. No matter how
carefully I plan my time, the plan always goes
wrong.

If I create schedules of military precision
in which several afternoon hours are given over
to the writing of the Great American Novel, the
school nurse is sure to phone at exactly the

will have developed a strange illness that
requires him to spend the remainder of the day in
bed, calling me at frequent intervals to bring
soup, juice, and tea.
83Article7_S
Other days, every item on my schedule will
