Title: OUR NATION CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH this FEBRUARY!
1OUR NATION CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH this
FEBRUARY!
2 Every February, we are asked to remember
the many African-Americans in our country who
struggled for civil rights.
3What are civil rights?
4These are the freedoms that many of us take for
granted
5They include the freedom to go to school where
we want to
6To work at a job of our choice and interest
7To live in a house and neighborhood where we
want
8And to vote for our own leaders.
9But not everyone in our country has always been
treated equally.
10Sometimes, African-Americans were treated
differently and unfairly.
11Not everyone has enjoyed these civil rights.
12Our history is full of very brave people who
fought for equality.
13And many used their right of FREE SPEECH found in
the First Amendment to bring about change!
14Lets take a look at some of these leaders who
fought for civil rights.
15Sojourner Truth worked for civil rights in New
York and other states in the early 1800s. She
was a speaker all over the country demanding
womens rights to vote!
16Frederick Douglas started his own newspaper. He
wrote against slavery and traveled around the
country giving speeches, telling people about his
experiences as a slave. He used his FIRST
AMENDMENT freedoms to convince people about the
evils of slavery.
17Martin Luther King, Jr. was a preacher and
leader for African-Americans civil rights.
He used his freedom of speech and the press,
asking for people to be judged by their
contributions, not by the color of their skin.
