  • Federalists- those who supported the Constitution.
  • Anti-federalists- those who opposed a strong
    central government.
  • Alexander Hamilton
  • James Madison
  • John Jay
  • Publius
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Brutus

Federalists-
  • Property Owners, landed rich, merchants in
    Northern United States
  • Believed in elitism. Saw themselves and those of
    their class most fit to govern.
  • Want a powerful central govt. 2 House Leg. With
    Senate being the more removed from the people
    the people they generally mistrusted.

Anti-federalists
  • Wrote responses to the Federalists Papers under
    the name Brutus and Cato
  • Group was mostly small farmers, shopkeepers and
    laborers.
  • Believe in the decency of the common man and
    direct democracy. Believe elites are corrupt.
  • WANT greater protection of individual rights,
    strong state government, frequent elections,
    smaller districts.

Bill of Rights.. (1791)First 10 amendments to
constitution.
  • Amendment 1- Five Freedoms
  • Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, and Petition
  • Amendment 2- Right to Bear Arms
  • People can own and carry guns with restrictions
  • Amendment 3- Quartering Soldiers
  • People cannot be forced to house soldiers any
    longer.
  • Amendment 4- Search and Seizure
  • Search warrant required.
  • Amendment 5- Rights of Accused
  • Many but most well known is not to have to say
    anything that would incriminate yourself. I
    plead the fifth.
