Title: Cellular Respiration

1
Cellular Respiration
  • Harvesting the stored energy from food!

2
Glycolysis
  • Glycolysis does not need oxygen as part of any of
its chemical reactions. It serves as a first step
in a variety of both aerobic and anaerobic
    energy-harvesting reactions.
  • Glycolysis happens in the cytoplasm of cells, not
    in some specialized organelle.
  • Glycolysis is the one metabolic pathway found in
    all living organisms.

8
Krebs Cycleadditional 2 ATP
  • The Krebs cycle occurs in the mitochondrial
matrix and generates a pool of chemical energy
molecules (ATP, NADH, and FADH2) from the
oxidation of pyruvic acid, the end product of
    glycolysis.

9
Electron Transport Chain34 additional ATP
  • The electron transport chain (ETC) consists of a
series of proteins, embedded in the inner
    mitochondrial membrane -cristae.

10
Anaerobic RespirationA.K.A fermentation
  • Two different types of fermentation
  • Lactic acid
  • No Co2 produced
  • Alcoholic
  • Co2 produced
  • Both types produce 2 additional ATP molecules

11
Anaerobic continued
  • Happens directly in the cytoplasm of the cell.
  • Humans ferment lactic acid in muscles where
oxygen becomes depleted. This lactic acid causes
the muscle stiffness cramps you feel after
    beginning exercise programs.

13
Similarities
  • Respiration and Photosynthesis both have an
electron transport chain and a cycle. (Calvin or
    Krebs)
  • Both synthesize ATP molecules with an ATP
    synthase.
  • Both produces each other's needed reactants.
  • Every single living organism undergoes
    Respiration.
