Brainstorm womens role in China
  • Obviously, in recent 20 years, especially the
later 5 years, Chinese women play a more
important role in economy, politics, culture,
    education, society and so on.
  • In the past, women are not even seen as a part of
country life. Old people may think women as a
part of men. They don't have the right to have
meals as men on the big table. They can't talk
aloud. They can't talk to other men except their
    husband.
  • Now, women can take important part in country's
politic life and economy. They now have equal
rights as men. They also make much improvement of
    quality themselves.

An interview Career woman or housewife ?
  1. Are you a career woman or a full-time
housewife? At present I am teaching English here
in Xiamen. But before coming here I was a
full-time housewife. Actually, working here in
Xiamen is the first time I have worked since
bringing up my family of six children. At present
I have two grown-up daughters with me here in
    Xiamen.
  2. How do you enjoy your current situation and
why?I find it a change from what I am used to,
that is, bringing up my family who have now all
    grown up and left home.

  • 3. How do you find enjoyment from your work?I
enjoy reading. But this can be a bit of a problem
in Xiamen as I don't have access to many English
books. Whenever I see a shop selling English
books I always check them out.
  • 4. Have you ever encountered any difficulties or
been at a loss in your current state? How do you
overcome them?My biggest problem is not being
able to do many simple things for myself like,
asking for simple directions, reading the menu in
a restaurant and even knowing the contents of
some packets of food in the supermarket.

  • 5. If you are given another chance to make a
choice again, what will it be and why?I would
have got a better education so that I could have
gotten better jobs and more money before starting
a family. A better career path would have been
best for me. But when you are young you often
make choices which don't serve you best.

Practice Speaking Womens Role in China
  • Referring to womens role in society of China,
the first word coming to my mind is change.
Especially in the 20th century, women's role has
changed dramatically in terms of both status and
    variety.
  • In the old society of China, women, in general,
were inferior to men. Women were to remain
ignored and to obeyfirst their fathers after
marriage, their husbands during widowhood, their
sons. The major role of women was to please their
husbands and bear children. Symbolic of womens
subservience was the practice of binding womens
feet which lasted nearly 1,000 years.

10
  • As times go on, the society is developing
constantly in all fields. Womens role in society
of China has been undergoing great changes. To
sum up the situation, women become more
independent. The have the right to receive
education, and go to the job markets to find
jobs. From working as nurses and teachers to
working as doctors, engineers and managers, women
are no longer confined to work in certain fields.
They even surpass men in some jobs which used to
be occupied by men. With womens abilities being
recognized, they are receiving more and more
    respect from the society.

11
  • Still, there exist some problems. In the rural
areas, women are still in a lower position. They
have to obey their husbands and almost
illiterate. Therefore, women have a long way to
go towards a completely equal society.
  • All in all, womens role in society of China is
being made various and significant, which is
certainly the trend of the whole world's
    development.

12
Career Women Need Equality
  • It cannot be denied that China has made great
strides towards gender equality in recent years.
Women in modern society have much more access to
    education, training and employment opportunities.
    But regrettably, extensive discrimination against
    career women continues to exist.
  • First, women are sometimes not entitled to
freedom of choice when it comes to their
profession. Every year many women college
graduates are turned down when seeking jobs. Some
employers even put male only in their adverts,
which leads to women being unable to choose their
jobs and pursue their dreams according to their
    own talent and interest.

13
Career Women Need Equality
  • As they are not seen to be on an equal footing
with men, it is even more difficult for women to
compete with men. The full and complete
development of a society requires the full
participation of women on equal terms with men in
    all fields.
  • Second, although there is no basic difference
between the competence and work performance of
women in top jobs and those of men in similar
positions, it is difficult for women to get
promotion or to rise to executive positions.
    Opportunities to participate in vocational
training and retraining are very often handed out
    to male employees.

14
Career Women Need Equality
  • Third, women are, no doubt, always the last to
get hired and the first to be laid off.
Furthermore, women who are pregnant are more
likely to get fired. It may sound reasonable when
some employers complain that women have the
primary responsibility of child rearing and if
they get promoted their new job with more
responsibility would conflict with their family
role. But should this be the basis for the unfair
treatment of women because of the roles that they
    play of wife and mother?

15
Career Women Need Equality
  • The great contribution from women to the welfare
of the family and society, as well as the social
significance of maternity, cannot be overlooked.
Bringing up children requires a level of
responsibility from both men and women and
    society as a whole.
  • As we know, discrimination against women can be
traced back to ancient times. Though there are no
easy methods to eliminate discrimination against
career women, it is high time that we focused on
the shift of the traditional role of men as well
as the role of women in society and in the
    family.

16
Career Women Need Equality
  • Social services should be established to enable
parents to combine family obligations with work
responsibilities through the development of more
facilities and services such as child-care. More
measures should be taken to protect women's job
security and health care during pregnancy.
  • The status of women in society is a pretty
reliable indication of the degree of civilization
    of that society.

17
Reading for fun
  • Life of a Good housewife
  • A man was sick and tired of going to work
every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted
her to see what he went through so he
prayedDear Lord I go to work every day and
put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at
home. I want her to know what I go through, so
please allow her body to switch with mine for a
    day. Amen.

18
  • God, in his infinite wisdom, granted
the man's wish. The next morning, sure enough,
the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked
breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set
out their school clothes, fed them breakfast,
packed their lunches, drove them to school, came
home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to
the cleaners and stopped at the bank to make a
deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home
to put away the groceries, paid the bills and
balanced the check book. He cleaned the cat's
litter box and bathed the dog.

19
  • Then it was already 1 P.M. and he
hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum,
dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. Ran to
the school to pick up the kids and got into an
argument with them on the way home. Set out milk
and cookies and got the kids organized to do
their homework, then set up the ironing board and
watched TV while he did the ironing. At 430
he began peeling potatoes and washing vegetables
for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped
    fresh beans for supper.

20
  • After supper, he cleaned the kitchen,
ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the
kids, and put them to bed. At 9 P.M . he was
exhausted and, though his daily chores weren't
finished, he went to bed where he was expected to
make love, which he managed to get through
without complaint. The next morning, he
awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said
    -
  • "Lord, I don't know what I was thinking. I was
so wrong to envy my wife's being able to stay
home all day. Please, oh! oh! please, let us
    trade back."

21
  • The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied
  • My son, I feel You have learned your lesson
and I will be happy to change things back to the
way they were. You'll just have to wait nine
months, though. You got pregnant last night.
