Crowdsourcing volunteers comb satellite photos
for Malaysia Airlines jet

  • You -- the person now reading this story -- can
help experts solve the mystery of what happened
to Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which
disappeared over the open sea. In fact, thousands
of aspiring good Samaritans are volunteering
their time to scour part of the plane's search
zone using detailed satellite images posted
online by DigitalGlobe. This idea of the public
(not experts) gathering information and posting
it is called crowdsourcing. It is a busy week
    for "crowdsourcing." Networks, like DigitalGlobe,
are asking the public to review its photos and
mark anything that looks interesting, any signs
of wreckage. One volunteer found a fascinating
image in a matter of minutes the silhouette in
the ocean has the scale of a Boeing 777-200, the
same model of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

  • More than four days since Malaysia Airlines
Flight 370 disappeared over Southeast Asia,
Malaysian officials not only don't know what
happened to the plane, they don't seem sure where
to look. On Wednesday, officials announced they
have once again expanded the search area. It now
covers 27,000 square miles -- in the Straits of
Malacca and in the South China Sea.
  • In 16 years, cancer will become the leading cause
of death in the United States, surpassing heart
disease, according to a new report from the
American Society of Clinical Oncology. The number
of new cancer cases is expected to increase
nearly 45 by 2030, from 1.6 million cases to 2.3
million cases annually. This influx of new
patients will place a bigger burden on a field of
medicine already stretched by physician shortages
and financial difficulties, says the report,
which highlights growing problems for cancer care
    in the United States.
  • In some ways, the "Pope Francis effect" doesn't
seem very effective at all. Despite the immense
popularity the aged Argentine has won since his
election last year, not a jot of doctrine has
changed, nor has the Catholic Church swelled with
American converts. But there's more than one way
to measure a pontiff's influence on his far-flung
flock. "There's an energy, a feeling, a spirit
here. It's like a healing balm."
