Title: Teaching Writing

1
Teaching Writing
  • Special Education 835
  • Nancy Laning

2
Writing is the most complex part of language.
  • Through writing we integrate previous learning
and experiences in listening, speaking, and
    reading.
  • It involves visual and motor memory.
  • It is the last part of language that is learned.

3
Written Expression Involves Many Things
  • Spoken language
  • The ability to read
  • Spelling skills
  • Legible handwriting or keyboarding
  • Knowledge of the rules of written usage
  • Cognitive strategies for organizing and planning
    the writing

4
The Writing Process
  • Current writing theory puts more emphasis on the
    process than on the product.
  • There are five elements in the writing
    process-prewriting, composing, revising, editing,
    and publishing.

5
Prewriting
  • The core of prewriting is topic selection.
  • Another part of prewriting is planning
  • Another part of planning is considering the
    audience.

6
Composing
  • This part of the process is the actual writing of
    a rough draft.

7
Revising
  • The student needs to read what he has written and
decide whether it says what he wants it to say.

8
Editing
  • Editing involves the fixing of the mechanics of
    the paper.

9
Publishing
  • Students ought to be allowed to read their
    writing to others-the intended audience.

10
Instruction of Writing
  • Model

11
Use the Framed Paragraph
  • A framed paragraph gives the main idea and asks
the writer to give the details.

12
Use Planning Sheets
  • A planning sheet asks questions that the writer
must answer before he writes. These ideas are
then used in the written piece.

13
Use mnemonic reminders
  • RAFT-role, audience, format, topic
  • SWEAT-state topic, write examples, explain
examples, add interesting ending, take a look at
    your work

14
Use motivational programs
  • Journal writing allows the student to freely
    express his feelings and experiences.
  • Writing aloud-The teacher writes down what the
student tells him to write on the paper.
  • Written conversation-The student talks to the
student by writing and the student must reply.

15
Rubrics
  • Rubrics should be only three to six evaluative
    criteria.

16
ISAT Rubrics
  • Focus
  • Elaboration
  • Organization
  • Integration
  • Conventions

17
The End
  • I have some examples of writing assignments for
    you.
  • Thank you for your attention.
