    course
  • Resources that are available to assist students
    in AP courses
  • Ways in which parents can help students in their
    AP courses
  • An opportunity to talk with individual teachers
    and ask questions about the AP Program and classes

Advanced Placement Program?
  • College-level courses taught in high schools by
    high school teachers
  • 37 courses offered nationally
  • BHS offers 13 courses, based on student
    interest. (15 were taken during the 2006-07
    school year).
  • Over 2 million exams offered nationally in 2007.
  • BHS gave 118 exams in 2007 and will give
    approximately 130 in 2008

Advanced Placement Program
  • AP teachers use college-level materials and
    course descriptions developed by a committee of
    college faculty and AP teachers.
  • AP Course Descriptions reflect courses taught in
    colleges and universities throughout the country.
  • All AP courses used an College Board approved
    teacher developed syllabus.

AP Examinations
  • Administered in May, free of charge in Manatee
    County
  • Approximately three hours long
  • Composed of multiple-choice and
  • free-response questions
  • Free-response questions graded by college
    professors and AP teachers in June
  • AP Examination grades range from 1 to 5

Responsibilities of AP Students
  • A willingness to actively engage with
    sophisticated concepts and to be judged by
    rigorous, college-level standards
  • A willingness to complete longer and more complex
    nightly assignments
  • A willingness to complete the AP
    Examination in May
  • Read, read, read

  • AP Study Guides and Website teachers have
    preferred guides, but all are useful, plus online
    tutorials and previous tests

How Can Parents Help?
  • Offer study support
  • Make sure students devote proper time to reading
    and studying. Follow teacher syllabus for
    specific dates and assignments.
  • Stress Relief

    first time students are challenged
