Malaysia Flight 370 New signal sounds 'just
like' one from a plane's beacon

  • After weeks of searching vast swaths of ocean,
investigators now have their "most promising"
lead yet in finding Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
A pinger locator in the Indian Ocean has detected
signals consistent with those sent by a flight
data recorder and a cockpit voice recorder. "We
are encouraged that we are very close to where we
need to be. But it could take days before
officials can confirm whether the signals did
indeed come from the plane, which fell off the
radar on March 8 with 239 people on board. "I
would ask all of you to treat this information
cautiously and responsibly. ... We haven't found
the aircraft yet. Time could be running out in
tracing the sounds. In a few hours or days, the
pingers aboard the plane stop transmitting for
good. The batteries inside the beacons, which are
designed to start sending signals when a plane
crashes into water, last about 30 days after the
devices are activated. Monday marks the 31st day
    of the search.

  • The Mazda spiders are back. The company notified
federal officials it is recalling 42,000 Mazda6
sedans because of a fire risk tied to yellow sac
spiders. The new recall includes model years 2010
through 2012. The yellow sac spider is attracted
to the hydrocarbons in gasoline and can find its
way into a fuel tank hose, said Mazda spokesman
Jeremy Barnes. There, it may weave a web that
blocks airflow. That could cause the fuel tank to
crack and, possibly, a fire. Mazda said it is not
aware of any fires due to this issue. Mazda
designed a special spring to prevent the spiders
from getting in. But sometimes the spiders find a
way, so it also designed a software fix to
alleviate pressure on the fuel tank and prevent
    the cracking.
  • Hostess Twinkies, Americas favorite golden
sponge cake with its oh-so-lovely crème filling,
turned 84 on Sunday. When Hostess Brands filed
for bankruptcy in 2012, there was plenty of
concern about what would happen to the tasty
treat. Luckily, Hostess found a financial
lifeline, ensuring that Twinkies would remain a
    culinary staple.
  • A German skydiver who was participating in a
222-person jump in Arizona was killed Thursday
when her main parachute malfunctioned, officials
said. Police in Eloy said Diana Paris, 46, of
Berlin, was killed Thursday morning. Paris was
taking part in a world-record attempt for most
skydivers changing from one formation to another
in a one jump, according to a blog post by the
jump's organizing group, World Team. Her main
parachute was released too low to the ground for
the reserve chute to work, said the group, which
calls itself "a highly skilled international team
of skydivers and support personnel" on its
Facebook page. The group said the fatal accident
was not related to the size of the group and no
other skydiver was involved. Paris had more than
1,500 jumps, her husband told police. The World
Team will do a 221-person attempt instead. "Our
dear friend cannot and will not be replaced. The
group will continue to hold the slot open in the
    skydiver's honor," a statement on the group's
blog said, adding that it was a difficult
decision to continue with the record attempt.
