Title: Torque
1Torque
- A torque is a vector that measures the tendency
of a force to rotate an object about some axis - torque Rotational force commonly measured in
units of newton metres.
2Cams
- A CAM changes the input motion, which is usually
rotary motion (a rotating motion), to a
reciprocating motion of the follower.
- A cam is a specially shaped piece of metal or
hard wearing plastic, which is usually fixed to a
rotating shaft. - A follower is held against the cam, either by its
own weight or by a spring. As the cam rotates the
follower moves up and down in a reciprocating
motion. - The distance and speed at which the follower
moves depends on the shape of the cam.
3Cam profiles
Circular cams or eccentric cams produce a smooth
motion. These cams are used in steam engines.
A swash plate cam is usually a disc that rotates
around a shaft. The disc is set at an angle so
that the follower moves up and down as the disc
rotates.
The Cylindrical Cam As the cylinder cam profile
rotates the follower moves upwards. When the
follower reaches the top, the cylinder cam
rotates in the opposite direction and follower
moves back down.
Pear shaped cams are used on the shafts of cars.
The follower remains motionless for about half of
the cycle of the cam and during the second half
it rises and falls.
Heart shaped cams allow the follower to rise and
fall with uniform velocity.
