Title: New Satellite-based Solutions for Train Control Systems
1New Satellite-based Solutions for Train
Control Systems
2New challenges on train control systems
- ERTMS (new MoU)
- extending specifications to meet global
requirements by introducing - Network independent TLC
- Satellite positioning
- New markets
- private freight/mining lines
- Low traffic-regional lines
- GNSS
- GPS, GLONASS fully operative

4Ansaldo STS already pioneering new technological
trends Roy Hill example
Roy Hill 1 project area
- Roy Hill 1 is a project by Hancock Prospecting to
develop a new Iron Ore mine and build the
necessary extraction and transportation
infrastructure - Giant size, low phosphorus iron ore deposit, with
2,4B tons of resources - Posco (3rd largest steel manufacturer) owns a 15
stake in the project
- The Roy Hill system is based on key innovative
technologies - TETRA IP-based TLC network
- Satellite-based localization with SIL4 accuracy
- The satellite-based system relies on a new
approach to achieve SIL4 accuracy with the
current satellite localizer (LDS) - ERTMS L2 based architecture
5Australian project with an important
customer Ansaldo STS already implementing new
TLC network solutions
New IP-based TLC solutions
- automated heavy haul railway
- enhancement of operation efficiency
- cost savings
Data Communication Systems represents a strategic
solution for this type of applications
6Russian market - ITARUS-ATC Concept
Common project between NIIAS and ASTS. Use the
best technologies available on the Russian and
Italian sides. Increase the performances and
safety of the existing lines and stations. Use
satellite technologies (GPS/GLONASS/GALILEO) to
locate the train. Use wireless technologies to
supervise the train from track-side (public GSM
is used on the trial site). Realize a modular
system. Develop a common system suitable also
for third countries.

8Roadmap for GNSS adoption
The Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) can play
a major role in the rail sector, both for fleet
management and rail safety (signalling and train
control). The EGNOS and GALILEO would
fundamentally contribute to increase reliability
and reduce cost of the ERTMS odometer

environment
3InSat
9The 3InSat Project
- Development and validation of a satellite-based
platform compatible with the ERTMS-ETCS - Exploitation of new satellite TLC technologies
- Adoption of GNSS and augmentation networks for
meeting SIL-4 requirements - Managed by ESA
- Roadmap up to the validation and certification
phase
Prioritary applications Local lines, low-traffic
,Regional lines, new freight lines on a
world-wide level
- Benefits
- Increased network capacity/efficiency
- Lower capex operational costs
10The Test Site Olbia-Cagliari railway line
- 3InSat features for satellite assets validation
on the test site - Total length approximately 50 km
- Double track to test train localization on
parallel tracks - Satellite localization system at SIL-4 level
- Multi-bearer TLC network
- Augmentation network validation
- Test Procedures validation
- Independent assessment by a NoBo (Italcertifer)
- Possible future evolutions of 3InSat, including
tests on ERTMS using satellite based
localization, are under discussion
