Harvesting in the wild

• Lots o harvesting
• Over 500 OAI data providers
• Been in contact with almost half of them at least
  once (if only a thanks for your data)
• Simple metadata, big system little time
  ignore lots of metadata inconsistencies

• Timeout errors
• Validation hoses my transform engine

• Years ago, few believed me when I reported an
  issue
• boy, has that changed! ?
• (due in part to me learning how to communicate
  more effectively what the actual problem is)
• OAI more valuable/valued now?

Whats become obvious

• Communication is imperative
• Lucid explanation is a must
• Tools are necessary
• validation, e.g., UTF-8, XML
• DP software that is consistent
• Best practices are invaluable
• for DP peace of mind
• for SP hair loss prevention
