Title: CLIMATE CHANGE
1CLIMATE CHANGE
2PROGRAMME
- FIND OUT FACTS ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS
IMPACT ON THE THIRD WORLD - OUR CHALLENGE TO CREATE AN AWARENESS RAISING
CAMPAIGN USING DIFFERENT MEDIUMS (Posters, Video
Clips, Live Show..)
3- With climate change weather patterns may
change, producing more heat waves, droughts,
floods and violent storms
4- Countries contributing less to climate change
suffer the most.
5Co2 EMISSIONS
6CLIMATE CHANGE
7DROUGHT AND HUNGER
- Scientists say rising global temperatures will
condemn millions to hunger this century. - In a United Nations report, they say
agricultural production will decline in Asia
and Africa, while Australia and New Zealand will
become short of water.
8Climate change exacerbates the vulnerability of
Third World countries
9The beautiful ice fields on the top of Mount
Kilimanjaro in East Africa could completely melt
away in the next 20 years
10MELTING GLACIERS
- The glaciers are like natural dams. They store
the snow in the wet season and they melt in the
dry season and bring water flow to the rivers. - Melting could have serious repercussions for
drinking water supply, crop irrigation,
hydroelectric production and tourism.

12- A short-term problem is Glacial Lake Outburst
Flood (Glof), the result of shrinking glaciers
and melting ice that causes lakes to grow and
breach loose moraine walls, sending huge floods
of water, mud and boulders downstream. - In 1985 a glacial lake burst in Khumbu in the
Everest region, killing at least 20 people and
washing away a hydropower station, the trekking
trail to Everest base camp and numerous bridges - Today villagers in the Himalaya spend days in
freezing water scooping out the melted ice from
lakes threatening their communities.
13- The rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers will
first increase the volume of water in rivers,
causing widespread flooding. - But in a few decades this situation will change
and the water level in rivers will decline,
meaning massive eco and environmental problems
for people in western China, Nepal and northern
India.
14BANGLADESH FLOODS
- The people who live on Char Bangla are among the
most vulnerable anywhere to a rise in sea level. - "I have to work hard because of my misfortune,"
said Abdul Razzak. "There's lots of suffering
here. Sometimes the tide is four or five feet
high. Then I can't sleep because I have to stay
standing up." - The villagers have built up platforms of mud for
their straw huts to try to keep them out of the
water. - They have planted trees hoping the roots will
bind the soil to stop it being washed away. -

16- Millions of people in low-lying countries may be
forced to migrate. But over the long term their
efforts will almost certainly be in vain. - Some estimate that the rise in sea level at the
top end of the IPCC forecast is predicting will
leave at least a fifth of Bangladesh under water.
- And it is not just coastal areas that are under
threat. Bangladesh's rivers are expected to flood
even more frequently.
17HURRICANES
According to some scientists, the ferocity and
frequency of hurricanes in the Caribbean last
year were caused by warming water in the
Atlantic.
18FOREST FIRES
- WITH DROUGHT LARGE SCALE FOREST FIRES ARE
MAKING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ILL FROM SMOKE AND
SMOG INHALATION, AS WELL AS DESTROYING NATURAL
HABITAT AND WILD LIFE ESPECIALLY IN SOUTH EAST
ASIA, BUT ALSO IN SOUTHERN EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA
AND AUSTRALIA
19EPIDEMICS
- Wold Health Organizations says climate change is
now causing 5 Million cases of ill health and
more than 150,000 death per year. This will
double in next 20 years. - As the climate gets warmer so diseases spread
more easily.
20AIR POLLUTION
WHO says 3m people a year are killed by outdoor
air pollution

- PREPARE AN AWARENESS RAISING CAMPAIGN ON THE
IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
23WHAT COULD A CAMPAIGN INCLUDE?
24Things that can be included in a campaign
- A slogan
- Posters
- Video clips
- A song
- A show/ singing/ dancing/acting out.
25WHO DOES WHAT?
- You need to decide
- What are the different jobs to get the task done
(including a campaign coordinator)? - What talents do you have to offer?
- Assign responsibilities
- Get on with the job..
